Wide receiver slotting

With the big news about Jones today, it dawns on me that we'll have 14 possible receivers on the roster in 2013. By my untrained eye, that seems like a lot:

(2013 Seniors - T. Smith, B. Smith - Juniors - Scott, Gooch, Jennings, Terrell - Sophs/RS Frosh - Gamble, Canady, Brown, Cooper, Nixon, Severin - True Frosh - Levrone, Jones)

Granted, there may be some attrition - but is there a likelihood of seeing any of these guys moved to other slots?

I know of 2 that can move right now...

Canady will most likely end up as a CB this fall, at least I hope.
With all due respect to Bobby Smith, I don't think he'll be back for a 5th year.

Other than that, I'm not sure. As of right now, Dockins is a WR too, but I think most of us expect him to move to TE with the current depth chart need and an apparent skill set match. Cooper is a very very tempting player as a Safety, but I don't know that he wants to do that at this point. I don't think anyone is questioning his potential at WR, that's for sure.

Overall, I'd say we're in a pretty good situation. The WRs are going to be young the next two years, but there is more talent there as a group than there has been in at least 10-12 years. The addition of Zack Jones makes it clear that the WR position won't be an area of need for some time.

This might be the most talented collection of receiving talent we've ever had at UVA. No joke. If the young guys realize their potential and we avoid attrition, this could be a really, really big strength of the team moving forward. I mean, seriously. I try to avoid platitudes like this, but it's am embarrassment of riches. thumbsup

  • Agreed that this amount of talent and potential is exciting, especially with a stable of guys that can get the ball to them.

Plus if the defensive monsters we have coming in truly develop into college players...we're looking at a nationally relevant Virginia squad.

Is Gamble even big enough to play TE?

    Sorry, saw the correction late.

That being said, I have seen Dockins many times. Talked to him at the gym, and if he is to ever play TE, it will have to be 3 years from now. He's just not that big. I'm 6'3", 240 lbs, and I am WAAAY bigger than Kyle.

Sorry dude, but Gamble is never going to be a TE. He doesn't have the frame, and will be one of the fastest players on our roster once he gets on grounds.

    i know! i was thinking Dockins :)

I knew he was a track guy but is he that fast? Any comparisons I might get?

  • Think Usain Bolt, but a lot slower. ;)

  • With all of this WR talent added to the team coupled with TE and FB being so lightly addressed, I think the writing is on the wall that we're slowly moving toward the ability to use more of a spread-the-field 3- and 4-wide look. That's my favorite kind of offense for college football, and I especially like it because our fellow ACC teams will generally lack the kind of talent and depth in the secondary to counter it.
