What is wrong with this team?!!!!!

  • I'm sorry, I probably shouldn't be posting right now. But I have never been more pissed off as a UVa basketball fan. Why doesn't this team know how to finish? Why does Zeglinski do the dumbest things at the most critical moments? Two turnovers in our last possessions are you kidding me? They continually find ways to build up your hopes as a fan, only to stomp on them at the end. When will they learn how to close out a game?!!!!!! Both James and White are gone, you have an 11 point lead with less than 4 minutes. How do you blow that? With the way we play D and the time we use on O, it should be impossible if you are a disciplined team. What the hell!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the rant. I've just never been more frustrated with this team!!

  • By team you mean the 5 starters and 2 healthy freshmen? FSU had more guys score than we had available to play. Tonight we finally saw the defense affected by lack of depth. We score 40 but gave up 34 in the second half.

  • I dont think your alone in that boat...this one stung pretty good. The dance ticket was punched....in a matter of seconds to go from that, to an absolute must win Sunday. Lose that one and our tourney drought likely extends to at least 2014....tonight is a good night for a few drinks.

I agree it's frustrating, but I have to believe the biggest reason for this loss is playing with seven players, one of whom, our second leading scorer, is playing with a broken hand. Four of our starters played 35 minutes or more! Sammy played 39 minutes. Scott played 38, Evans played 37 and Harris played 35. That's a lot of minutes to play, especially considering the kind of defense we use AND the kind of game that FSU plays. Brogdon being out hurt a lot. We are thin enough with him, without him it is going to be hard for us to win. I really hope he is ready to go on Saturday because we will need him.

Tough game and a very tough loss. I may be wrong, and I didn't have a chance to follow too closely as I was doing other things. We can still do this. Let's go Hoos!

  • C'mon guys, you cant really be serious by saying we lost because of our lack of depth... We somehow built an 11 point lead with 7 guys, so you cant say we aren't capable with playing 7 guys... UVA sports is just notorious for folding in the big game, and our basketball team has yet to win the big game this year.. The team just doesn't have a killer instinct; there should be no reason why we don't win that game. And it sucks because fans cheer so hard and give as much support as they can, but the team lets them down. How much longer can fans tolerate this?

  • Losing 5 games by 2 or 3 points and down to the last possession with Sene out, Harrell and Johnson gone and now Brogdon out this game, I say the cup is half full. It sucks losing these close games. But a long 3 pointer with .8 seconds on the clock, hell. This team will make the NCAA tourney and I would not want to play us. This is the kind of team will be prepared by Bennett and on short turnaround will frustrate a lot of teams. Nolte, Anderson and Tobey will be in the mix next year and even though Mike is a big loss we will be more versatile and will be on our way the being an NCAA regular March Madness team.

How can you confidently say we're in the tourney? We have fallen apart down the stretch and we really haven't won a big game all year. Ive been saying for weeks that we're safely in but I'm starting to second guess myself

    Forever.

Virginia fans can and will tolerate it forever... or until it stops happening.

The sun will rise tomorrow, our basketball team will be on the bubble, and we will find a way to be ready to cheer these guys on in Sunday's game.

  • Phooenix,

So far on this thread if you ignore bbb989 you get extremely rational thoughts from our fans. I am absolutely devastated right now. It sucks. I wish we could close down the stretch more, but shit happens. Miller went off tonight and he completely killed us. It does not overshadow the fact that this team is dealing with 3 devastating injuries and 2 kids that decided to quit on their team. The fact that the staff has kept this team together and won 21 games is incredible. Are we on the bubble? Sure. Should we have been a lock into the tournament now? Sure. But we have a chance to go into College Park and seal our fate there. I know this won't heal anything, but that's unfortunately all I got right now.

You think that the last 4 minutes four of our starters weren't feeling it? I bet they were. That being said you are right that there are probably other reasons. The end of the game seemed to be a little poorly managed, especially from Bennett's side. He seems to take a little too long to call time outs. I think it would have been better to get a 2-for-1 there, but who knows. I thought it could set it up better.

At the same time, people in general need to stop using these damned "universals." UVA sports is notorious for folding in the big game? Like the way the football team folded against FSU this past season? Like the way baseball folded against UC Irvine to make it to the CWS for the second time in three years? Like the way lacrosse battled back in the opening round of the NCAAT to survive and go on to win the national championship? No, that statement that Virginia sports fails in the big game is a lie. Did we fold tonight in a big game? Yes, but that doesn't mean that it should be an indictment across ALL programs. That's a falsehood in many ways.

  • 22-9 and 9 ACC wins. Assuming we beat Maryland. ACC has UNC, Duke then FSU I cannot see 3 teams only in. We are a lock with a single win in the ACC Tourney. I think we are in with all the close loses. JMHO.

I agree bbb. We don't have a killer instinct. It always seems like we let down once we are in a position to win, instead of stepping on the gas. I'm sure part of that is depth and being tired, but it doesn't excuse the play at the end of alot of games. We seem to get very careless with the ball at the end of a game with leads, when we should be tightening up, milking the clock, making secure passes. Sammy for one seems to get more frenetic and more rushed.

Anyway, a big waste of a great game from Mike Scott.

We haven't capitalized on our chances, that's for sure, and I agree with you there. We had a chance to make a big statement last weekend against Carolina, despite the several obstacles we faced. We had a chance to make a statement tonight, and lost on a last second three pointer against FSU. Hats off to the Seminoles. They are still a very good team, and they have found a way to win in crunch time right now. I would attribute some of that to the fact that Hamilton has built a program there built on his own principles over the past decade. We don't have that yet, but we will. We haven't won the big games consistently, but we have won at least one big game this year. I would certainly classify the Michigan game as a big win. They are a legitimate top 15 team. We also had some good wins against Oregon and LSU. Other than that, we haven't had much.

Yeah Bennett's strategies towards the end of games has always been questionable. It seems like the team loses all of its aggressiveness towards the end of games, and I think that's because of the coach's strategy.

But Id have to disagree with you. We always put ourselves in the position to play in a big game, but we just cant get over the hump. Consider the USC baseball game that we completely choked offensively, consider the VT football game where a win would've put us in the ACCCG. Consider all of the big conference basketball games where we had a chance to really take the next step, but we failed to get over the hump. I've said this numerous time but the theme of this year's basketball team is good but not great.

  • This is still one of our better seasons and losses have been by mostly tiny margins so that's a plus
On the flip side depth is a problem, but is partly TB's fault, we don't have that many injuries, just mediocre roster management..we do have a great class coming in so hopefully this will resolve itself

Yeah shin, I'll feel better in a few days. And I'll probably be in front of the tv again on Sunday. But this one definitely hurts. Especially because we are so thin, we have to take advantage after busting our butts to be in winning position.

The basketball team certainly had the opportunity to be great this year, and we haven't quite gotten there. That being said, I will take a good team over a mediocre to bad team that we have been the past few years.

As far as getting over the hump, you mention a couple good examples, and I can't disagree that those were games we couldn't get up and win in crunch time. However, we have certainly overcome and succeeded in big games before, so you can't make a blanket statement that UVA sports folds in the big games. Have we before? Yes, but for as many times as you have mentioned folding in a big game, we have also come up big and won.

This one stings more than the Miami game because this would've solIdified our spot in the dance.. And it sucks for our seniors to lose this game in the way that we lost it.

  • A very disappointing loss after we took control in the 2nd half. This team is fading and I believe the injuries and transfers have finally taken it's toll. However, with an 11 point lead with 4 minutes left, you have got to put a team away and we didn't do that tonight. We've had a problem doing it for a couple of years now. VaTech in 2010 (up 10 with 2 minutes), last year against Miami (up 10 with less than a minute), and tonight. We've also won some close games against NCST, Miami, and Tech but we had big leads on these teams with 4 minutes left and let each one of them back in the game. It's a pattern that Bennett needs to put an end to. This has happened for three years now. I still think we make the tournament but I do believe we will have to win one more to get in and I don't think beating GT in the first round of the ACCT is going to cut it. There were big expectations this year and we havn't met them but when KT and JJ left, we knew that an injury could derail our chances of being great and that is exactly what happened. I think it's important to make the tournament this year just to say we have broken the drought because if we don't, pressure will start to mount for Coach Bennett. I know many on here will disagree but looking at next year, we will be depending on 3 sophmores and 4 freshmen. I'm not sure we can count on getting in next year even though we may. 4 years with no NCAA appearance is not going to set well with fans even though patience is always the key for building a program that all of us can be proud of. I believe Coach Bennett will be a huge success here but I think even he would admit that improvements must be made for the play calling at the end of games.

That game didn't have half the implications that this game did, so I honestly wouldn't necessarily call it that big of a game.. And plus, the significance of that game has decreased since it happened so long ago, and our team has completely changed since them.

Sorry bud, but you are wrong. We have a history of winning the big game, and losing one or four games we shouldn't ever lose. That is the life of the UVA fan, not whatever you are talking about here. Didn't we win the Natty in Lacrosse? Didn't we win the must-win game in baseball to send us to Omaha, in our last at bat? Unfortunately, we did lose. But, this is not typical, and what should be expected. We just lost to the most athletic team in the ACC, whilst only playing 7. They flat out earned it with that shot. Sorry man, this sucked huge balls, but I don't always expect that other shoe to drop. I'm a nuevo fan, only been following for about 336 months of my life. Eventually I willl just give up. But, not now. Not any time soon.
