  • Question #1 -- What will happen first: Football back to a New Year's Day-ish bowl, basketball to the Sweet Sixteen, or baseball back to the CWS?

Question #2 -- Ten years from now, we will look back at the last decade of Virginia football and say ______.

Question #3 -- Who is the most important football recruit for UVA to land in the 2013 class? Why?

Question #4 -- Choose one and explain: Bennettball and the pack-line defense will lead the Hoos to unprecedented success OR it will scare off too many big-time recruits for the program to achieve sustained excellence.

Question #5 -- You have $100 million to donate to the UVA athletic department. What are your requests for how they use that money?

That should be enough to get some conversations going this weekend, eh?

    1 new years day bowl
2 why did we wait do long to replace ag with ml?
3 nobody in particular, just depth at linebacker. because we desperately need it.
4 unsure, but I am leaning towards unprecedented success.
5 speaker system and improved gameday atmosphere in scott stadium, but more importantly a concentrated effort to keep all hokies out of Scott stadium and the surrounding parking lots during our games. that's not 100,000,000 dollars but its what I want most. Use the rest to subsidize the cost of football tickets until attendance improves to the point where people will pay current prices and fill the stands, consistently.

Fun game, I am interested to hear others' responses. I hope many participate.

  • 1 - I will say baseball back to CWS, because I don't see UVA making a new years bowl or sweet sixteen next year and baseball should be moving along after a semi-rebuilding year this year.

2 - This is the decade we learned that consistent winning and occasional ACC title shots are worth the trade off of not becoming a football factory.

    3 - Smoke - we can't lose a heavy UVA lean from the 757 in a tough in-state year.

4 - Neither - Hoos will never have the success we had in the 80s and 90s because the ACC doesnt have the attraction it used to with every team on television; furthermore, the number of teams willing to do whatever it takes to win has increased greatly - we will not break the rules to achieve success.

5 - I would request 30 million or so be devoted to preventing Hokies from using 64 west during football season. I would request that another 20 million be used to open a dedicated all hours tailgating lot for true fans near the football stadium. I would request that 5 million be set aside to provide yearly raffle prizes for all fans who attend every home football game and do not leave before the end of the game (scan tickets in and out - those who attend every minute of every home game are entered into a drawing for a sizable prize). I would request that 20 of the other 45 million be used to create a fund for paying our assistant coaches better than anywhere else in the conference in both football and basketball. I would request that 15 of the final 25 million be used to secure Brian O'Connor for life. Finally, the last 10 million should be used to build band seating on the hill, move the visitors section to the upper left corner of the stadium near the hill, and to hire ushers who kick out anyone who asks anyone to sit down in the football or basketball stadiums.

Great set of questions Kendall. Here we go

question 1: basketball in the sweet 16. Will not happen next year but it will happen the year after.

question 2: Bennett and London are the best 1, 2 tandem in revenue sports in the country.

question 3: Two recruits, Harris and Smoke. No question about it. Heavy UVA leans and absolute STUDS. Must close the deal to take the next step.

question 4: We will never get a true big time recruit but we will get some good talent to run the system. We will be successful with the pack-line. Hell, we already have. It wasn't the pack-line defense that let us down the last month of the season. It was injuries and transfers. Offense sells tickets but Defense wins championships. No doubt in my mind that we will be a Final Four team in five years.

question 5: Football tickets need to be priced to allow struggling Hoo fans to come see their team, Indoor practice facility, and paying our football assistant coaches top dollar to keep contanuity.

    Not sure yet

It will only last until the talent is here to run the court. Give it 2 years.

Question #5 -- You have $100 million to donate to the UVA athletic department. What are your requests for how they use that money?

I want box seats and some Crown Royal. Have fun with the rest.

  • I love the post.

#1 CWS. O'Connor will rebuild quickly, and we'll be back soon.

#2 It was better than the previous decade. It's nice to be consistently good again, and thank god Beamer passed his prime and got ungraciously fired for losing to UVa repeatedly.

#3 Harris, because we are the front-runner, he is an elite recruit, and we need some depth in the defensive backfield.

#4 Bennett and the pack line D will bring the program consistent trips to the tourney, but it will never be enough to compete with the handful of teams each year that are flooded with talent, athleticism. and coaching. I see some sweet 16s in our future, but I'm not sure we'll be winning any national championships. Considering where we've been these last 15 years, I'll take it.

#5 Spend more money on men's basketball and football. As much as I enjoy the occasional national championship in ping pong, bball and football are a season long emotional investment for me, and I'm tired of trading in crappy football and basketball for excellence in basket weaving. The tide seems to be turning in my favorite two sports, but that's where I'd put my money.

    1) CWS

    2) Putting a huge emphasis on recruiting the 757 changed our program around.

    3) Smoke, keep that Bayside pipeline going.

    4) Success, we're on track to land a couple big-time recruits (especially in '14), as we did for the '12 class.

    5) Buy 500 Abbot buses and have them pick up UVA fans for home and away games. Give the rest to recruits (jk).

1- Gotta go with the baseball team.
    2- Things got better
3- Mizzell. Strong UVA lean, future star, 757, Baseside. Missing out somehow would be devastating.
4- Success. There will always be enough players. Sure, the crop of Elite recruits isn't large, but it's not like we land those anyway. The Joe Harris' of the world will lead to a continued pretty darn good team
5- KICK OUT EVERY BASKETBALL SEASON TICKET HOLDER THAT DOESN'T FILL THEIR LOWER LEVEL SEATS WITH A HOO FOR EVERY GAME (we'll have a forgiveness policy for games like Longwood) (no offense, LU, go Lancers!)

    1) CWS
    2) This was the return to relevance that lead us to an ACC title and consistently winning 9 games a season...BOLD
    3) Harris - his abilities and the need
    4) Lead us to success - not willing to say unprecedented. This defense will keep us in games no matter who's on the floor. I see a lot of NCAA banners in the future with a few elite 8's and maybe even final 4's in the rafters.
    5) Everything that hoodaves said above (too good)...but yes a new speaker system too.

Ok I'm reading back over this and I sound too bullish, but I'm not going to temper my enthusiasm.

    1) Football, this year! We do not have the middle / late inning arms to make the CWS this year, but look for us back to CWS as early as next spring.

    2) Mike London just made Francis his whooping boy for the last time, tear!

    3) Smoke

    4) Our model is out there...team basketball and consistent top 10 status ie Wisconsin. Mix in a superstar scorer and titles can be won!

  • Question #1 -- Baseball back to the CWS.

Question #2 -- See Al Groh, this is how this program is supposed to be ran.

Question #3 -- I think Tim Harris and Mizzell are both equally huge to being part of the 2013 class. I think they are both on the verge on 5 star caliber.

Question #4 -- The pack-line defense can be successful. A team full of McD's burger boys or 5 star players does not always equal success. It's about playing as a team, and with Bennett as the coach, ACC titles and NCAA tourney runs can and will be accomplished.

Question #5 -- Improve the gameday experience at Scott w/ better speakers, expand the seating capacity at Davenport.

    1) No idea about baseball, but I think basketballl wil be competing on a regular basis for the Sweet 16 the year after next. I am slightly less confident about football.

    2) I think in 10 years, we will look back at this decade as the return of UVA basketball. This program was so good from 1980 until 1996, and then went through an epic period of darkenss. I think TB brings us back. If he does, this will be the story of the decade, even if CML is as successful on an absolute basis. Because UVa football's demise was only a few years old when CML took the job.

    3) I do not see one crucial recruit this year, as I have for the past couple of years (Nicholson, Lambert). What I do think is key is that this staff somehow pull together a top 35 type class in what looks to be a very challenging recruiting year. If this staff can do that, we will have three very solid classes back to back to back. Add that to this staff's seeming improvement on the attrition front, and look out!

    4) Neither. I expect that we will win at a top 30 type level underBennet (not unprecedented) without attracting many big time recruits.

    5) Not sure money would do it, but if it would I would do everything in my power to create a better gameday environment at Scott. That is another topic all together.

    1. I doesn't matter. We are heading or in the right direction with all of them. I'm also enjoying our #1 ranked men's lax team, #1 ranked women's rowing team and #2 ranked men's tennis team, too.

    2. UVA is the Stanford of the East.

    3. Taquan Mizzell or EJ Levenberry

    4. UVA fans simply need to give Bennett the time he needs to produce success with his system.

    5. Continue the emphasis on becoming the best all-sports athletic program in the nation.

  • Great responses, guys! Thanks a ton for humoring me on these --- I just wanted to make sure we had something to ponder over the weekend, when things tend to slow down on the board just a tad.

As for my responses to the questions...

#1 -- I think football could be back to a New Year's bowl as soon as at the conclusion of this upcoming season... but I think something like the Music City is probably a bit more realistic. Basketball is still at least two seasons away from the Sweet Sixteen. So that leaves baseball, which I think should go ahead and book tickets to Omaha for the summer of 2013.

#2 -- Wow, we really lucked out to land Mike London when we did.

#3 -- Smoke Mizzell. Not because of need at running back, but because of need for SEC-caliber talent and a "notice us" buzzworthy type of commitment. Smoke is a national-level recruit, and landing him will open eyes around the nation. Plus, this is a player around whom you can build an entire offense. We haven't had that since Heath Miller, though Perry Jones is going to try his damnedest to be that player this season.

#4 -- Unprecedented success... IF (and it's a big IF) the fanbase can stay patient during these next two seasons, which will be the last two "rebuilding" seasons of the Bennett regime. We won't bring aboard many instant impact recruits, so it's imperative that we're able to stay calm and not overreact to every little loss while the kids develop into players.

#5 -- I'd dump all the cash into Davenport field, and make it the best college baseball stadium on the East Coast, complete with an Ole Miss-style outfield experience. I've never seen anything like that, and I desperately want it here. Also, if a bigger/better/badder Davenport can attract a single-A or rookie league team... then yeah. The pump is primed for Charlottesville to go whole hog as a baseball town. (I saw it with my own two eyes yesterday afternoon, with 4100+ fans filling that place to the gills. 4100 fans is close to double-A attendance levels.)
