The first three series of the second half were infuriating for the reasons you cited:
Series 1: great KO return, big first play on a run to Jones, then two passing plays that went backwayrds on two penalties
Series 2: 2nd and 2 at the GT 40. I don't mind the kill shot attempt for Smith in the endzone, but then run the ball twice to get the first down. But another failed pass attempt and punt.
Series 3: the infamouns fourth and 1 where we have the wrong QB running the wrong play - a 15 yard out.
I noticed last year that Lazor seems to always try to be very unpredictable. Everybody can see the value in that but I think it is possible this year that against a lot of teams, we don not need to be upredictable. Simply because due to our OL and RBs, we will be able to exert our will over a lot os opponents on the schedule, regardless of whether they know what we will be doing or not.

Congrats on the win, guys. Good, competitive football game.
What did you think of Virginia's playcalling?
Was sitting in a chatroom with a bunch of GT fans during the game and no one could figure out why the Virginia offensive coordinator kept insisting on passing the ball. GT couldn't stop UVA running between the tackles. Didn't stop UVA's run the whole game. The only time GT got stops was when UVA inexplicably decided to pass, including the 7-point interception gift.
We just couldn't understand why UVA kept throwing the ball. Did you folks see it that way too or were we missing something?

Thanks to Highlander and Play for the responses.
Yep, you saw the same things we did.
Series 1: GT didn't make 1 play to stop a run after getting shoved around the whole first half. Then UVA has a big run and then passes so GT never stops the run.
Series: 2: Yep, two yards to make and GT hasn't stopped your run all day and another pass instead of a run.
Series 3: Another pass on a short yardage play, GT STILL hasn't stopped UVA's run.
Really poor playing calling by Lazor in our opinions as UVA was running it right down Tech's throats and never forced GT to stop the run. GT never stopped UVA on the ground the whole game when forced to do so.
Good point that Lazor was trying to be unpredictable. That is what it seemed like. But your offensive line was blowing GT off the ball and your backs were running hard and GT NEVER stopped your run on a possession down the whole game. And quite frankly your QBs are average at best so until the other team stops the run keep pounding. Lazor almost out-thought himself into a loss.
If anybody asked London about it in the post game presser or if he's asked about it this week I'd be interested to hear what he says.
Bottom line, you guys won the game. Congrats again.

Considering none of us REALLY know what we are talking about, i think the play calling was quite good. Yes, there were maybe 2 plays that didnt work, but they were poorly executed and were probably the right call given the circumstances. That is why we are fans and they are coaches.
