Cavaliers and Cougars Will Meet Four Times in Next Eight Seasons

Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia and BYU announced today the addition of games in 2019 and 2020 to their future football series. The two schools previously announced a two-game series for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

The specific dates and locations for the games are:
    Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 – Charlottesville, Va.
    Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014 – Provo, Utah
    Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019 – Charlottesville, Va.
    Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020 – Provo, Utah

“The extension of the series with BYU is a result of our efforts to adjust our non-conference schedule in 2013,” said Virginia Executive Associate Director of Athletics Jon Oliver “We look forward to the four-game series against aquality football program with a proven track record of success.”

The 2013 season opener will be the fourth meeting in the series between the teams. Virginia defeated BYU 22-16 during the 1987 All-American Bowl in Birmingham, Ala. The Cavaliers defeated the Cougars 45-40 in Provo, Utah, in 1999 and the following season BYU downed UVa 38-35 in overtime in Charlottesville.

  • Can somebody explain to me what benefit we get from playing in Provo? Once maybe but twice?

  • That's easy....the benefit is that they actually agreed to the extension!!!
We are still not at a level where we can force another programs hand that doesn't play in the Sun Belt or C-USA. Some day, real soon, we will be able to demand such things just because a team wants the showcase shot. We're on the way. Just not there quite yet.

  • I like it. This is the caliber of program we should be scheduling OOC. Certainly not a cupcake, but also not Oregon coming to stomp a 50-point mudhole in our backside.

Since we're doing all of this Westward scheduling, why not Cal? Aren't they our natural academic rival? Let's play them in football!
