Virginia Basketball Recruiting Chart

  • Hey Hoos/Cavs,

I used to keep up a NC State Basketball Recruiting Chart over at PackPride (the NC State Scout boards) which combined all the links and ratings from Scout, ESPN, and Rivals. It got difficult to maintain by hand, so I automated the process, and threw a basic UI together and put it up on the web. I did the same for all the other schools while I was automating it.

I started cleaning up the rosters on my fellow ACC teams first, and then moved on to the rest of the BCS conferences. I've gotten a lot of great feedback from fans of other schools on the chart, so I hope you will find it useful as well.

BTW, I haven't gotten to validating the active rosters for schools outside the BCS conferences yet, so that data will be inaccurate due to red-shirts, prep schools, junior colleges and transfers.

I'd also love to hear any suggestions you might have to improve the site as well; I'll try to implement them if I can keep my wife from leaving me for spending all my time working on this site.

Anyway, here is the Virginia page, let me know if you see any corrections, or have any questions. Hope you enjoy!

  • Thanks for sharing. I have similar recruiting sheet like this that also tracks what they did every year, but your format gives me some good ideas!

  • Great job, but your scholarship numbers are slightly off. We have 3 spots left for 2012, and add one more in 2013 for a cumulative total of 4.

Hmm, do you see one of the players in the Junior Class that is listed as a scholarship player rather than a walk-on? I want to make sure you I get this right.

  • That's really nice.

Notice that the highest rated player on our team right now is Brogdon at 98 (4*). No one else is top 100 or average 4 stars. If you told me we would have players with those attributes, I'd say we would be in the bottom half of the ACC. Instead, we are strongly in the hunt for top 4 in the conference and an NCAA bid.

  • Very nice. Thanks. I took a look at Hokies page, and am shocked (well, maybe not shocked) at how many offers they have outstanding for their 2013 class.

  • Philawolf,

I think your problem is Teven Jones, the 2012 signee who enrolled early and is now redshirting. Your chart shows us with four freshmen, including Jones, but the running tally says three. I'm guessing that when you bumped him up a year, you forgot to revise the totals.

Next year's 10-man roster, by class:
    Evans
    Mitchell, Harris
    Atkins, Jesperson, Brogdon
    Tobey, Nolte, Anderson, Jones
--with 3 spots open, if we can find anyone to fill them.

    Excellent work nonetheless!

Thank you! I'm not sure how I missed that I didn't re-classify him as "on scholarship". His name was in a different color than all the other players on the roster...

Everything should be correct now. I'll be adding the red-shirt designation for players currently red-shirting after the season is over in case they "burn" their redshirt if the rest of the team gets hit with injuries.

  • Some Updates:

For those of you who were having issues with the size of the chart being too large and having to scroll left to right, I've made a fix so that viewing the page should be easier with no scrolling.

The rankings are now in lock-step with ESPN, Scout and Rivals. I've now put in place a process that checks for new rankings nightly, so they should stay in sync. I've also added the change between the current rankings and the previous rankings for each player.

I've added a check for changes in the star value for each player's profile at Scout, Rivals and ESPN, so issues with the star values being "stale" for players should now be addressed.

I've added the team committed to for the player ranking pages, and addressed the issue where the 2013 rankings weren't showing up properly.

Please let me know if you'd prefer less frequent updates. I don't want to spam you guys.

Here's hoping if we do have terrible luck on Friday that the NCAA lets us in anyway. biggrin

    Okay, I'll allow that.

I definitely think you guys should get in over the likes of Drexel. State looks like a tourney team to me; the more ACC teams in the dance, the better. Well, except for Virginia Tech. And I could live with an NCAA tournament without Duke or UNC.

  • Another update for you guys, I've added the twitter handle of every ranked recruit (overall or at their position) that I could find for the 2012 and 2013 classes. So if you were looking at the player pages before and you didn't see their twitter stream, it should be there now.

Edit: Assuming they have a twitter account, and that the account isn't locked.

  • Hey Cavs,

I wanted to give you an update on the site. I've added embedded YouTube highlights (and/or interviews) on the player profile pages for every recruit ranked (either overall or at their position) in 2012, 2013, and 2014. There are a few exceptions where I couldn't find video highlights or interviews for the players, but I got >95%.

I've made some other tweaks as well for the colorblind, so the color coding has changed, I've also added a toggle feature for showing and hiding the overall and position ranks for each player, so that its easier to see the whole chart in one screen. Some other minor updates as well.

Judging by this, I'm pretty sure you're going to like watching Justin Anderson next year.

Thanks! I'm psyched we're playing one the second weekend of the tourney, don't want it to end.
