  • Virginia Announces Spring Football Schedule

UVa will hold free open practices in Fairfax, Newport News and Richmond

Charlottesville, VA - Virginia football coach Mike London announced today the Cavaliers' spring football schedule. The first of the team's 15 practice dates takes place March 19 on the practice fields behind the McCue Center. In addition to the practices held at UVa, the Cavaliers will hold free open practices in Fairfax, Newport News and Richmond.

The first out-of-town practice is schedule for Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Va., on Saturday, March 24 from 1-3 p.m. The Cavaliers will practice at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. on Friday, March 30 from 7-9 p.m. and in Richmond, Va. on Saturday, April 7 at Sports Backers Stadium from 1-3 p.m.

A fan zone will be staged at each practice site that includes promotional give-a-ways and interactive activities for children. The fan zone will be open one hour before the start of each practice session.

The team will play its annual Orange-Blue spring football scrimmage Saturday, April 14 at Scott Stadium. Gates will open at noon with on-field activities available for fans for approximately one hour. The Orange-Blue spring football scrimmage will begin at 2 p.m.

“We have enjoyed the opportunity to take the team on the road during the spring and look forward to going to three new sites this year,” said head coach Mike London. “The support of our fans at these practices has been fantastic. They have been great opportunities for us to interact with the area high school coaches and for recruits to come out and get a first-hand look at our program.”

In addition to the open practices in Fairfax, Newport News and Richmond, the Cavaliers' practice sessions on March 19, 21 & 23 (8-10 a.m.) and April 6 (8-10 a.m.) will be open to the public. Those practices will take place behind the McCue Center on the football practice fields.

  • SportsBacker Stadium is perfect fit in Richmond -- centrally located and easy to get to - plus you can walk to Buz and Neds for BBQ takeout.

  • I was wondering to myself if the out of town practices help this team mentally prepare for road games. We seemed to be much better on the road last year as opposed to previous years...thoughts?

  • Richmond practice time has been moved to 3pm-5pm. cool

Should allow for more 'prospects' to attend, as there is a big event at Highland Springs earlier in the day!

It is by design that some of the new faces get to experience what a weekend trip entails before they climb the depth chart and make the travel list. London (and Groh) took a few true freshmen on trips to road games when they were certainly not going to play, but a host of guys have never experienced something as dynamic as leaving town with the whole team. The demands and the ability to handle something as simple as meeting with friends and parents and juggling school obligations is bigger and tougher to handle than most understand.

Time will tell if the idea fits in the Virginia budget, but it is worth doing until that bridge is burned.
