This is why UVA's big man recruiting worries me. We desperately need to land a big man in the 2014 class. We are set next year with four (Mitchel, Atkins, Tobey, Gill), but three obviously doesn't cut it with our injury luck. If Tobey and Atkins had been full strength on Saturday, I think we beat UNC away and have more than a puncher's chance at Miami. Without them, I'll be surprised to keep it within 10 tonight. Our guards and wings are playing well (minus Jontel who has regressed, but is still a big asset on the defensive end), but without depth down low, we are in trouble.
I would be very surprised if Atkins could put in 10 productive minutes tonight. In the very limited minutes he has played, he has been a big liability and looks to really be hurting. My hat is off to the kid just for giving it a shot for his team.
Miami is going to try and beat us up inside initially I would suspect. Dump it down to Gamble in the paint and get Reggie Johnson some touches as well. They have to get try to get Akil, Darien, etc. in foul trouble because it would sincerely force our hand to go even smaller than we are are.
Joe is going to have to be smart as well playing Durand Scott. He's going to drive and penetrate...hopefully Joe doesn't pick up some cheapies dealing with him. Jesperson and Mckinney-Jones will be an interesting matchup.
JA is going to have to contain Kadji, which physically he can but Kadji is going to stretch him out so much, they are just going to drive at Akil.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. We really have to out work them to pick up this W tonight. They seemingly have the advantage at 4/5 spots and some would argue all 5, but we'll see. Akil needs to have a big night and we just need everyone else to elevate their games but play within themselves.
Seeing as we're an 8.5 point pooch at #2 Miami is that Vegas telling us they think we're an NCAA tourny team?
I think the 4 guard set takes Johnson out of the game. Especially with the short turnaround. They'll get their points in the paint. But Johnson's big ass chasing JA around is going to work to our advantage.
Kadiji worries me the most on that team. He's got a pretty soft touch out on the perimeter in addition to his post game. Going to have to hope JA can keep him in check and keep Akil in on Gamble/Johnson.
