The Question I have on Sims

  • I know he was a huge recruit, I am sure he is very talented, and from what I hear he sounds like a very solid kid that we would in most circumstances love to have in the program. Got all that. What I don't get is that Bama's stating QBS McCarron does not strike me as a world beater or the next coming of Andrew Luck or even Russell Wilson. He strikes me as a very steady system guy who can make all the throws, but a steady Eddie, run the offense QB. I am just puzzled why Sims is number 2 on the depth chart and has not supplanted a steady system guy like McCarron. I Am not saying Sims in not a big talent or stating that he would or would not be a good fit for us, the question nags at me. We have a Steady QB who makes good throws and has shown great improvement in Rocco. What gives? Just askin'....

    Saban is a control freak and wants (demands) that a QB play his way and play steady instead of flashy. That's not to say that Sims won't do it or is overly flashy, but that McCarron is more of a fit for Saban in that way.

    Satan recruited Sims, correct? I hear the Saban thoughts, but as I recall his LSU QB was not just a "company man" when he won at LSU. Not discounting this, just not over the hump as to why Sims is the back up

    A.J. McCarron completed 219 of 319 passes for 2634 yards (66.8%) and 16 touchdowns against 5 interceptions for a QB rating of 147.3.

    He was fourth in the SEC in passing efficiency, fifth in points responsible for (all positions), third in passing yardage, and third in total offense (all positions).

    He also has another a year in the system over Sims.

    McCarron is a good QB. 2600 yards, right at 67% completion rate, 16/5 td/int ratio and was named the national championship game mvp. Not sure what you're really looking for but there's no shame in being the backup to that. Sims is a good qb and would, at the very least, increase competition during practice. All great teams have competition at every position and we desperately need that!

    All good points, and again, this is not a say Sims is not a very talented kid. I watched McCarron a few times and feel that he is a very egood QB, but have not seen nor heard superlatives about him or his potential that you do around other elite QBs.

    Good point...except he's facing SEC defenses every week... And he's also a sophmore...in two years he could be a first round draft pick. He does have a live arm, has the resect of his demanding teammates, and just won a national title. To paraphrase Herm Edwards: "He plays to win the game."
    Very few sophmore QB's could have made the plays he made in against LSU in a National Championship game.

    ...and he and Simms were neck and neck coming into camp.

    Getting Simms would be a GREAT benefit for UVa on every level: competetion, great kid, comes from a pipeline schoool, has competed on the highest level, is a great teammate.

    I think there's this image of McCarron being sort of a place holder as QB and not really that good. He was a big time recruit himself and is a big time QB. In Alabama's system, no QB is going to look spectacular. It is an offense based on running the football and not turning the ball over.

    The idea that not beating out McCarron is a knock on Sims is just not a sound argument. The fact is that Sims was neck and neck with McCarron going into the spring game and McCarron received some PT as a back up the year before.
