The Day After: USC

Football is played on a field, not on paper. Look around the ACC in Week Two and it is readily apparent. An overmatched UVa team faced USC in L.A. on Saturday night and in a 17-14 loss, proved it.

  • Great article. Realized how close and how we really should have won that game. 2 missed field goals, the interception in the endzone, the late hit by Womack, and the bad call by the refs on the fake punt. UGH!

  • I am on my flight home right Now and this one is hurting a bit!! It has been a while since I have had this feeling, which is a good thing. The apathy of the Groh regime is gone!!

Also, what an awesome atmosphere that was to be at last night. USC fans were a blast to hang out with at the tailgates and inside the stadium. 82k can make an awful lot of noise when they need to. Helluva UVa turnout as well. We gained a lot of respect with those folks yesterday!

  • Yeah, TheHoo, it appeared that we had a good group of UVA fans there. I bet that was an exciting atmosphere, especially when UVA had USC on their heels in the first half.

  • The best part was from the opening kick off, everyone in the Coliseum knew that we had come to play. I listened to countless Trojans during the game and post tailgate scene about how fast UVa played and was flying to the football.

This team will get a well deserved week off and VMI come the CVille at the right time in my opinion. I think we will have a very good chance to take the Noles out on 10/2

  • A superb, insightful post-game summary. I am very encouraged by the progress being made in such a short period of time with the new staff. The most important aspect is the players have regained a strong "belief" system in each other and the approach the staff is taking with them. This is transforming itself in the strong "mentality" you reference in the article. The bye week comes at a good time to refine/correct what has transpired thus far. The line play on both sides has been the most delightful area. Good play in the trenches can take this team well above expectations.

  • Thanks for kudos and for your own added insight, Mike. I couldn't agree more on the bye week timing.

  • Great analysis. I do believe the UVa game in 1995 at the bighouse had a bigger crowd.

    davehoo

  • davehoo, you are correct...@ UM is the largest we have played in front of.

Yes, that was a typo. It was supposed to say the 10th largest. I left out the "10th".
