Stanwick Earns Second-Consecutive ACC Offensive Player of the Week Honor
UVa captain wins third ACC weekly honor on the year
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia senior attackman Steele Stanwick has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row, as announced by the league office for games through April 8.
Stanwick becomes the first player in ACC men's lacrosse history to be named player of the week three times in the same season since the award's inception in 1986. The league started a defensive player of the week award for the 2011 season, prior all players were eligible for the player of the week honor.
Stanwick led Virginia with three goals and four assists in a 15-10 road conference victory over No. 9 North Carolina. The Baltimore, Md., native had two goals and two assists during a 6-0 Cavalier run to break a 4-4 tie. It marked the fourth time this season he has reached seven points in a game, and is now averaging 4.91 points, the third-highest rate in the nation.
The weekly honor is the fifth of Stanwick's career. No ACC player besides Stanwick has more than two offensive awards this season. He was also named ACC Offensive Player of the Week on March 13 and April 2. Prior to this season, Stanwick won once in 2011 and once in 2010. UVa has now earned five ACC Offensive Player of the Week nods in eight weeks of games this season. Rob Emery won the accolade on Feb. 21 and Colin Briggs picked his up on March 6.
Virginia returns to action on Friday when No. 7 Duke invades Klöckner Stadium for Senior Day. The contest will be televised live on ESPNU in HD and faceoff is set for 6 p.m.
