'Skins get the #2 pick...

The Panthers defense is garbage and who are their stud receivers? A 35 year old steve smith and Legadu Nannee?

If we add some OL and a stud receiver like Colston or Jackson (or both) we'll have a lot of weapons on offense.

Helu, RG3, Fred Davis, V-Jax, Gaffney, Cooley, Santana Moss, Leanord Hankerson (who was really coming on before he got hurt). Our defense is good and young. One more corner would be huge to get rid of D Hall.

Studs meant multiple offensive weapons not just at wr and they have good tes too. Steve Smith was a boss last year.

Colston isnt a #1, he drops too many and jackson was awful most of last year.

Cant count on either cooley or davis. One cares more about weed than football and cooleys been a joke since gibbs left.

The secondary is just bad. It needs a lot more than one corner. We also need lbs and i dont know what our management has done to make anybody think they can draft more than servicable ol.

I hate seeing it spun this way because while correct in presentation, Washington improved it's pick, so what really happened is that they gave up two first rounders to assure themselves of getting RG3. Is it excessive? On the surface, yes, but everyone knew the market. That draft slot is RG3's and if there was a team that needed a young, talented quarterback, it was Washington.

This is a situation where I think you people to look past the cost in terms of how many spots improved and focus on the market price/need/guarantee.

Right on Jamie! This was a move the redskins had to make, whether it works or not. Giving up two first round picks is worth it to find your QB for the next ten years. All the people criticizing this move are just the usual redskins haters. This isn't signing old, overpriced free agents. This is committing to a quality human being that has a lot of promise. He brings excitement back to DC.

based on the evaluated talent of the top two qbs the market price is through the roof. i know people hate grossman, but ol. ol and ol are in a lot worse spot than qb right now. options like flynn and kolb are available too. there is zero guarantee.

You can address all those needs in FA. You can't get a franchise QB in FA. Flynn and Ortin are not the answers.

There are a couple of good guards out there in fa and maybe finnegan at cb. We are going to over pay to attract them.

I agree you need to draft a qb and rgIII is a much better option than orton and flynn. I cant agree with giving up so many valuable picks when so many holes exist.

  • Cheaper than getting Peyton Manning and Snyder doesn't want a coach carousel which is what he'll get if Shannahan keeps losing. I like the play. Just wonder how much they'll have to pay for him.

    MMCUVA

  • There's NO chance it will end up like these "sure" things:

Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Heath Shuler, Andre Ware, Art Schlichter, David Carr, Joey Harrington, Tim Couch, David Klingler, JaMarcus Russell, Cade McNown, Rick Mirer, Kelly Stoufer, Todd Blackledge, Matt Leinart, etc...

Especially with the history of "system" QB's doing well. Or playing in a league (The Big 12) with the worst defenses in the country.

I'm trying to figure out when a trade of lots of draft picks has worked.

    Go Cowboys.

  • This move is a prime example of why the skins will never win anything while Dan Snyder is the owner.

  • The only player the Skins should give up three first rounders for would be a relatively young, proven QB. Like.....Aaron Rodgers.

This is Minnesota for Herschel Walker all over. RGIII gets his leg broken because he doesnt have great protection, and this move looks like one that sets the franchise back for a long time.

Meanwhile, St. Louis, like Dallas, is setting itself up for a huge move upwards that possibly saves their franchise when they're being talked about leaving the city.

Chris Long has got to be happy. I think the biggest news isn't this move and its impact on DC, it's definitely St Louis getting to own the draft for three years.

  • Surreal that anyone can rationalize this deal. It is completely and utterly irrational.

It will most likely set the Skins back another 5-7 years. It could make them a playofff fixture for the next 10. But there is nothing in between.

Any talk of "they had to do this deal", and "they had to get a franchise QB", and "that's just what the market was", is just complete willful ignorance. Let's call a spade a spade and accept that this is betting the entire house on one player.

If they didn't have to do this in your opinion, then I would like to hear your alternatives for a franchise that has wasted draft picks and money, on a lot of QBs since Mark Rypien. Please explain how this is irrational for a team with the worst QBs in football?

I may be ignorant and willfully so, but ... Tell me another franchise with a more unsettled quarterback situation over the last 20 years? Grossman and Beck may be the least amount of talent at the position in those 20 years, although the Wuerffel/Matthews or Banks/George seasons could make a run.

The market absolutely dictated this. The second round pick was the key because Cleveland would have had the pick otherwise. If you can't see that, then you haven't been paying attention. There's a reason why the Cleveland Plain Dealer broke this story, it's because the Browns thought they had it.

Are the Redskins betting the house on it? Definitely.

I don't know how this will work out but will the cap space available to address other needs, I don't really have a problem with taking a chance on a 'face of the franchise' quarterback as opposed to overpaying a ton of vets with injury history.

What I like about RG3 is that he's a unique talent and he's smart. Plus, I like his socks.

  • Perhaps that's true, JO. However, if you think back to the Skins' best years in the 80s and 90s, they won with solid defense (even without a lot of outright stars), great line play, solid but system RBs, and caretaker, serviceable QBs. Building a team and plugging in system QBs seems like a better model for long-term success than selling the farm for one QB, who himself has some question marks. Def not a skins fan here, esp under current ownership, but Snyder et al. Have shown zero ability to build a team around RGiii, or any other QB.

Sign someone in FA (if not Peyton, then Orton or Flynn), and draft a guy like Cousins and let him ripen for 2 years.

The nice thing about the Skins is that wasting money punishes no one but Snyder. Wasting picks is what got the Skins to this mess to begin with.

This is irrational because the Skins are not in a position to be trading picks away yet. While they've made strides the last 2-3 years, their lack of depth became apparent after Week 5. They do not have the depth yet to trade away this number of picks. They can improve their QB situation without selling themselves short on everywhere else.

    1) The nice thing about being so bad at QB is that you can improve without getting Luck or RGIII. Orton would be a marked improvement over Beck/Grossman.

    2) I understand that RGIII's market rate was high. Most teams besides Cleveland or DC would say it's too high. Just because I really really need a car doesn't mean I should pay too much for it.

    3) I too enjoy his socks, and his mid-range dreads. He'll make a fine bobblehead for my desk. I just wish he didn't cost so much.

Orton is a marginal improvement over Grossman. And the Redskins have tried the FA QB market and failed miserably. Why continue to do the same thing? Manning wasn't going to the Skins, so that is a non-starter. The most glaring weakness the Redskins has is at QB, without question. You can't just get a FA QB and think everything will be ok. They will continue to suck without a franchise QB. Where can you find good talent on the FA market? WR, CB, OL, where the Redskins need help. You think about 28 other teams would have given up 2 1st round picks for someone like Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, or Aaron Rodgers? Of course they would. Is there any guarantee that Griffin will be a franchise QB? No. But I can pretty much guarantee that no FAs in the current QB market are going to make the Redskins any better. Not only is Griffin a good player, but he is a great person, which the city of Washington desperately needs.

  • I look at this as Snyders Last Stand. Either RG3 will be incredible and this move will define Snyders ownership tenure, or else it will be such an awful flop that he will kill himself out of shame and embarrassment and at least we will have a new owner.
