QB's?

  • Yes, Verica threw int's like a drunkard throws beads at Mardi Gras, but at the same time, we had TWO WR's getting 800 yards in receiving which for UVA is unheard of recently. Thoughts?

If everyone only settled for good enough... would anything ever really be good enough?

  • Just saying.... don't write off the QB just yet...

  • Whoever the quarterback will be is going to be behind a solid offensive line whose strength is pass blocking. I believe our running game will be a little better and our tight ends will be solid. Receiving corps should be pretty good with Burd and Snyder coming back along with Tim Smith. The new wrinkle in the offense will be Terrell and Jennings. Lazor should waste no time getting these two play makers on the field because everytime they touch the ball, they could take it to the endzone. I hope we see some reverses, wildcat, and some misdirection plays with these two speedsters. The quarterback will be asked to do two things. One-manage the game. Don't get into your head that you have to win the game. Let the players around you make the big play. Two-turnovers to a minimum. We don't need a quarterback throwing two or three interceptions a game. If this happens, we lose and another 4-8 season. Our margin of error will be small and unfortunately that will fall on the shoulders of the quarterback. Our quarterback has to be smart rather than athletic. I believe London will go with whichever quarterback has the leadership qualities to be successful and the man who wont make the critical mistake. He needs someone conservative but capable. That is why I believe that Rocco will be the man that London will entrust with the position at the start of the season. What he does with it will dictate whether he keeps the job. London made a smart move by bring in so many young quarterbacks a few years ago. Surely, there is one hidden gem in the bunch and I believe there is. I don't think there is a Shawn Moore or a Matt Schuab but there could be one good enough to get us to 8 wins. And a quarterback who can get us to 8 wins is a GEM in my book.

Frankly, I thought he was like a drunken Zulu throws a coconut.

But seriously, while Verica made some terrible mistakes last season, he made a bunch of plays as well. I actually feel the mistakes will be down some this year. Unfortunately, I anticipate the positives of the air game will be down some too. (Less interceptions, but potentially more sacks/stalled drives). I can almost guarantee it will be ugly at first as it take our offense some time to become productive. We'll need to show patience with a new QB, several new RBs, WRs that missed the Spring...

Our OL will be called on to to play a major offensive roll. The must create a successful running game. And they must give our extremely inexperienced QB (whomever it will be) a lot of time to go through route progressions and make good decisions in the pocket.

He also got pinned for mistakes that shouldn't have been his, like WR's running the wrong routes or balls off of receivers (or TEs) hands that ultimately ended up in the hands of the defender.

The wrong route deal is something to be mindful of moving forward under Lazor. In an offense that is predicated on precise routes and timed drops, the quarterback is going to throw to spots. If the WR runs the wrong route, rounds it off and breaks it off too shallow, interceptions will come.

  • I always liked Verica and thought he got blamed for things that wasn't his fault. A lot of people blamed him for the Duke loss but I believe the defense lost that game-plain and simple. Marc Verica wasn't recruited to start. He was recruited to back up Lalich and maybe play when quarterbacks ahead of him were unable. I don't think the Groh staff ever anticipated that this man would start over 20 games in his career. He was a 2 star high school quarterback who played to his full abilities. I can't fault him for his play. In my book, Verica was a warrior and a good leader who never shifted blame to others. He usually accepted responsibility and tried to correct his mistakes. No he wasn't a great quarterback but when he could have left the program when London came on board because he graduated in 2010. He didn't. He decided to play his last year of eligibility because this team needed him. One more thing. Without Verica's clutch 3rd down passes against Miami, we would have lost that game last year.

  • Yep, all great points. I'm sure I am in the minority of being overly optimistic, but I do feel that with a good OL, RB's and WR's (which we now have) that our selection of current QB's can be successful... whoever the choice may end up being. Lazor seems to have the offensive plan that has been needed for some time.
And BTW, I wasn't meaning to blast Verica.... just pointing out the good direction that the offense is heading. Things looked great despite the int's and other mistakes.
