President Sullivan Stepping Down

  • For those that didn't get the email just now:

    June 10, 2012

On behalf of the Board of Visitors, we are writing to tell you that the Board and President Teresa Sullivan today mutually agreed that she will step down as president of the University of Virginia effective August 15, 2012.

We express our deep appreciation to President Sullivan for her effective stewardship of the University. She is a much respected educator, as well as a visible presence in the University community and a prominent voice in higher education.

President Sullivan commented on the great honor to serve as President of the University of Virginia. She said, “Although the board and I have a philosophical difference of opinion, I will always treasure having had the opportunity to work with so many gifted faculty and staff, talented students, and loyal alumni. I am also grateful for the privilege to have worked with our extraordinary vice presidents and deans.”

For the past year, the Board has had ongoing discussions about the importance of developing, articulating and acting on a clear and concrete strategic vision. The Board believes that in the rapidly changing and highly pressurized external environment in both health care and in academia, the University needs to remain at the forefront of change.

We remain guided by Mr. Jefferson’s inspirational vision:

“The great object of our aim from the beginning has been to make this Establishment the most eminent in the United States.”

In service to that vision, the Board is committed to preserving the legacy with which we have been entrusted. At the core of that legacy is the quality and care of our faculty and staff. We have made a clear choice to act in the best interest of all concerned.

We assure you that the Board of Visitors will move expeditiously to name an interim president and to begin a search for a new leader. We hope you will assist us as we move through this time of change and strive for a smooth and productive transition.

On behalf of the Board of Visitors,

    Helen E. Dragas, Rector
    Mark Kington, Vice Rector

  • As far as I knew, she was doing a fine job. But this certainly makes sense interms of higher ed organizational structure/culture. After a longstanding UVA guy like Casteen departs, you bring someone unrelated in to shake things up for a couple years, then replace them soon with a more established person. Helps elicit change while appeasing the traditional base.

  • From an athletics point of view that's too bad. I appreciated how involved she seemed to be with our sports programs. I haven't really paid close attention to her job from other points of view, but I never heard any complaints.

You know, for a UVA fan, you sure don't seem to like UVA very much.

As for Sullivan stepping down, I've heard it's from not seeing eye to eye with the BOV on how to recruit replacement faculty for the future stability, success, and acclaim of the University. A mutual parting of ways, if you will.

Anyway, Sullivan brought a lot to the table for us in terms of athletics. She was certainly the anti-Casteen in that regard. So I hope we're able to replace her with another Prez who will embrace the pursuit of athletic excellence... especially in football and basketball. And I hope the new Prez will be smart, forward-thinking, and aggressive when it comes to conference realignment and UVA's place in the shifting landscape.

  • A lot of folks on here are making huge assumptions about stuff they know nothing about. No one on here is a college administrator, a member of UVa's board, or has any true idea about what either does or what issues currently exist.

I stand corrected, then. Should have said I doubt anyone on here is a college administrator or board member. However, I still find it highly unlikely that any of the more outlandish claims being made here can be substantiated in any way.

  • Totally agree. I don't work at UVA, so don't know anything concrete - but like I said up top, the timing is shocking initially, but it's not really unusual.

I'd be shocked though if the next President doesn't have solid UVA ties.

  • Im a fan of the sports programs. I dont give a damn about the school and the tradition. I said it before how i became a fan. At the age of 9 i moved to virginia and all i saw was unc gear. All the kids were unc fans. I could not understand how va people represent another state. So me always wanting to be different start cheering for uva and my passion grew. When i was 17 i was invited to see a nc state game by the coaches and they were playing uva. Now im sitting with nc state recruits and fans in their seats and i was heering for uva. Uva lost and this one kid he was 6'8 and his last name i believe was thorton got into a fist fight. He started teasin me about the lost and i mush him in the face.LOL now nc stae wasnt tht serious about me but if they were i think they wouldnt of liked i was in theor paid seats cheering for the opponent. So yes im a fan but hate the pompus attitude tht come from alum and fans. Not all but most

  • Another uva story. I was coming to va on the plane from ny. There was this bad girl on the plane and she sat next to me. So i bought her a drink and she tld me she graduated from uva and she was going down for some african american celebaration. Your know me i was talkin hood and broken english and so was she. Anyway a man across from us heard us talkin about uva basketballl team and joined in. He was also a uva graduate. Out of no where this girl started talking proper and like a valley girl. She put her drink on my stand cus i assume she didnt want the man to see her drinking. I ask her later cus we kept in contact y the change and she said u have to learn how to adjust or u wont b accepted. It jus blew my mind. Yes the girl was black and the man was an older white man. Very nice man. He even offered me a ride to my hotel but tugard did not change for him. Im real
