OT: Junior Seau dead

  • Whoah. I hate having to link a TMZ article, but they appear to have the lead on this one.

  • Very sad. You gotta wonder how much longer the NFL can keeping going the way its going (heck, football at ALL levels). You have a growing number of ex-players coming forward and now you have two guys who have shot themselves in the chest in the past year.

    I think the thing that the NFL is doing with respect to helmet-to-helmet is window dressing. It doesn't really change the fact that the athletes playing today are so much bigger and faster which causes much more damage.

    I have debated with friends whether or not in our lifetime football as we know it may be gone and drastically changed. Stuff like you have to tackle below the waist or it's a flag, no punts or kickoffs or even not allowing zone coverages (you have to rush the qb or man mark someone). It's just drunken banter but somethings going to give.

  • Unless Czar Goodell does anything about the concussion issue, I honestly think that in 20-30 years, football will be in a similar position to the one that boxing faces today.

  • I may be missing something, but is there evidence that shows that a football player is at a higher risk to commit suicide than other professions? Basically, why in the world are you implying that football or head trauma caused this guy to shoot himself? I'm not taking a shot here, just not aware if there is a Study showing a strong correlation between the two variables I am not aware of. Could personal issues that we are unaware of not be the issue? I get irritated that media and society immediately try to point fingers when something tragic happens without knowing the full story. I am terribly sorry for he and his loved ones. I loved watching him play.

    I think the science is still emerging, but there are indications of a link between repeated concussions and psychological issues. But honestly, the science is going to be so far behind the issue on this. The suggestion that repeat concussions will mess you up in head is already out there. It's not a big leap in logic to think that parents are going to start steering their kids away from football towards "safer" sports. Throw in a couple well timed lawsuits or an insurance company or two that crunches the numbers and finds out that covering schools with football teams is a money loser...well, you can see the forces that may crush the sport. That, or at least force major changes to save it from the fate of boxing and horse racing (major sports that have declined precipitously in attention).

  • Hoo Cares, my response to that link is not directed at you, but that is just silly. That backs up my original point about randomly pointing figures before the facts come out. That implies that Seau is pissed at the league because they paid him millions of dollars over his career, so he shot himself in the chest to ensure that everyone knows the truth about the NFL. It makes no sense. If he felt so strong about the issue, how much good can he do to lobby against head trauma if he's dead?

  • There is still a lot coming out on this , apparently he was having some serious financial issues, along with a divorce in the last 3 years . So this may not be entirely due to concussions from the past , and more about the issues that NFL Players and other pro athletes are facing such as withdrawl from the games that they play for just about all of their lives. There are many that have had a hard time adjusting to a "normal" life outside of sports, and that is where the NFL and every other professional sport needs to be looking at changing their way of thinking, and do something to help these people , such as counciling.
    It is a huge adjustment for these people, being away from the game that they have been playing for most of their lives, regardless of what may have happened , it should be a wake up call to the NFL and others that something needs to be done, because this is becoming all to common. JMO
