OT: JO I was out in Colorado.....

  • last weekend and went to the New Belgium Brewery in Ft. Collins on Friday. We got in a tour, got to try any beer they had for free and generally had a great time. Tried the Abigail, Sunshine Wheat, 1554,Hoptoberfest, Ranger IPA and some limited edition 'sour' beer that tasted like a green apple warhead. The company is really cool, started by one guy, all employees get stock, they let the employees have as much free beer as they want, pay really well, are vey green, even put energy back into the grid, etc. They make 760 beers per minute........

If anyone like microbrews and visit the area, I definitely recommend it.

Our guide drank beer the entire tour, never mispoke once, gave you all the info you could stand and knew his stuff. He said he had been trying to get a job there for 2 years before they hired him. People were nice as can be.....

If everyone only settled for good enough... would anything ever really be good enough?

  • The tour guys said every employee always does the right thing b/c it's best for the company and themselves.....and they give the employees free beer but i'm sure it's "within reason". They give them parties all the time, free tastings of the secret new beers......it just sounded like a really cool place to work, like they actually gave a damn about their people. Which I found very refreshing compared to the east coast attitude.

  • Another good one to go to is Stone in Escondido, CA, near San Diego. Brand spanking new building about 20 minutes from the ocean. Great restaurant as well.

Funny you mention that, I have a date with a Fat Tire here shortly. New Belgium is a great brewery and I'm a big fan.

I've got a couple Fat Tire 22s to get me through the first half tomorrow. I have a 6er of Yuengling for the second half if things are going well, Jim Beam if they aren't.

  • Not to take anything away from New Belgium (who is killing it with their mid-atlantic marketing campaign by the way) but Odell is the better brewery in Fort Collins. Give that one a try too.
A little closer to home there are now 4 breweries and a cidery (coming soon) between Crozet and Wintergreen on the 151 corridor. Nelson Co is blowing up with booze.

  • I don't understand all these "micro-brews." When Budwieser was made perfection was created. bow

And it is Budweiser that is distributing the New Belgium brand here.

  • I thought Blue Ridge Bev (Miller and Coors) had the distribution rights locally? Anyhow, wait until their winter brew comes out. The "Thirty-Two Below" is sensational.

Might depend on locality. The Bud distributor here (Fredericksburg) has it.

  • My bad JO, you are right, based on locality/region. Enjoy the Fat Tire.

One person I was with that went to school at CSU in Ft Collins said that the New Belgium tour blew Odells away.....but that's just one opinion. Really cool town and I'm sure that one would be good too. I saw the 54 Schilling signs everywhere but I never tried it.
