Notre Dame joins ACC for hoops in 2013 ...

  • Comment from ACC Commissioner John Swofford:
“Our conference, schools and fans are delighted that Notre Dame will join the ACC on July 1, 2013. The addition of Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse, followed by Louisville in 2014, positions us extremely well with an outstanding collection of 15 member institutions.”

“As was previously announced, our annual five games against Notre Dame in football will begin with the 2014 season. This not only will enhance our league’s already ambitious football schedules but also will provide terrific fan excitement.”

“From a basketball perspective, the level of competition will be second to none. As we look towards the future, there’s no denying that ACC Basketball will continue to set even higher standards of excitement and excellence. The competition will be brutal, which is a great thing for our league and fans.”

Comment from Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame Vice President and Director of Athletics:
“Notre Dame now looks forward with great anticipation to becoming a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. We are thrilled to join a great group of institutions who share our commitment to the integration of athletics into the academic mission of the university. Our coaches and student-athletes across our athletic programs are truly excited about the new challenges ahead.”

  • Man, we sure picked a good time to have our most talented squad in over a decade ... the ACC is going to be siiiiiick next year.

Look at this year's RPI rankings for next year's ACC ...

    001. 27-4 Duke
    004. 24-6 Miami
    016. 23-8 Syracuse
    018. 21-9 UNC
    028. 22-9 NC State
    040. 24-7 Pitt
    044. 23-8 Notre Dame
    066. 21-10 Virginia
    083. 20-11 Maryland
    084. 17-14 Florida St.

That's 10 top-100 teams. And in 2014-15 we can ditch Maryland and add #3 26-5 Louisville. That would give the ACC three of the top four teams in the RPI.

Just to finish up the list ...

    118. 15-16 Boston College
    128. 16-14 Georgia Tech
    164. 13-17 Wake Forest
    170. 13-18 Virginia Tech (HA!)
    175. 13-17 Clemson

  • A fifteen team, conference sucks. You can't come close to having balanced schedules with that many teams. It's hard to create new rivalries when you only play some of these teams once a year. And even though these are good teams joining the league I don't give two sh--s about any of them. It's all about money, I get that but it sucks hard. They should rename the conference because this is not the ACC anymore.

  • At the very least, the ACC will now get 7-9 bids a year

I'm not a fan either, but resigned to the fact that this is the current fad in college athletics and there is nothing I can do about it but continue to support the Hoos and wait for the next cycle.

  • How do you manage the ACC tourney with 14/15/16 teams? Would it make more sense to do away with the tourney and make the NCAA let every team play 3 more regular season games? The ACC tournament that we grew up watching has already been dead for a while.

  • I think it's awesome. We all grew up in a time when ACC basketball was the best in the land. Lately, the conference has fallen off significantly. But with Virginia and a few other teams on the rise, along with the additions of Syracuse, Pitt, ND, and Louisville, we're back to being the top dogs. No other conference can even come close. It's [almost] everything that was good about the Big East, but with a southern-fried ACC flavor, and I think it's going to be amazing. Aren't you excited to go to the JPJ and watch us play against Louisville? The Irish? Aren't you excited to see Duke/Cuse as a conference game? I think it's a good thing, a very good thing. Evolve to survive... but to me, this is not surviving, it is thriving.

And if you think basketball is worthless in the grand scheme of things when it comes to conference realignment and stability, I urge you to read this:

Agreed. To me, growing up watching the tournament was special. I had friends as a kid who's fathers allowed them to miss school to watch it. I didn't have that luxury, but that's how serious we take it. I get it, but it's hard to see something that was as good as college sports gets go by the wayside. The old 9 team format was as good as it gets in my mind. But as trips said, it died in 2004. And as much as we all hate UMD, it sux to see them go. Yea, the ACC may upgrade in competition, but it has serious down-graded in excitement in my opinion. I would take a win against a bubble UMD team over a ranked L'ville or ND team any day, it the tradition in me.
