Malcolm Brogdon to Redshirt 2012-13 Season ...

  • Brogdon to Redshirt 2012-13 Season
Sophomore guard to miss 2012-13 season while recovering from foot surgery

    Nov. 28, 2012

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Virginia sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon (Norcross, Ga.) will redshirt the 2012-13 season, Cavalier head coach Tony Bennett announced on Wednesday. Brogdon will miss the season to further recover from successful foot surgery performed on March 7.

"Malcolm is an important part of the program's future, so the plan to redshirt him will allow for his foot to fully recover," Bennett said. "He will continue to push hard in his recovery during this season."

Brogdon played in Virginia's first 28 games as a freshman in 2011-12. He averaged 6.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 39.6 percent (63-159) from the field and 80 percent (40-50) from the free-throw line. Brogdon scored in double figures five times.

Brogdon scored a season-high 16 points in Virginia's 70-58 victory over then-No. 14 Michigan on Nov. 29. His scoring high in an Atlantic Coast Conference game last season was 14 points in UVa's 71-44 win over Maryland on Feb. 18.

  • I think this is the right move for our future and shows that his injury was much more serious than they led us on to believe from the start. I hope he is able to return and show us what he has but I am not too optimistic.

I could see this coming, this was a major surgery and I'm glad they aren't going to try and rush him back. Plus this will benefit us on the back end when he is a 5th year senior.

I got a hangnail that I am recovering from... my boss said "Suck it up, and where are my TPS reports?".... God I wish I was an athlete.

On a serious note.... Why does "Successful" foot surgery take 8 months+ to return from?

He'll be fine once it finally heals the correct way. It takes a long time. He should be as good as new at the start of next season. It normally takes about a year to fully recover from this type of operation.

They accidentally cut the whole thing off the first time.

  • Looks like Tugard got his wish, I believe he posted that a Brogdon RS yr beneficial to Brogdon and the program moving forward.

Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.

  • Best moved for Malcolm and the team. IMO the play of Jones made this move easier.

Takes time to grow a new one... that makes sense.

  • Playa, I heard me may need surgery on the other foot as well. Could be interesting

    hoojimmy

  • Had to think this was going to happen. Looks like it will be some time before he is fully recovered. I wonder how much the better than expected play of TJ and the return of Jontel played into the timing of this decision.

What's the status of the walk-on who had a history of foot problems/surgeries and re-injured his foot earlier this season?

I bet Tugard doesn't know what the penalty is for shooting a fricaseeing rabbit without a fricaseeing rabbit license.

This coming from a guy who would rip the leg off an opponent with your bare hands and attach it to yourself using Duck Tape if you were to require surgery.... You are one tough SOB TheHoo!!

  • This is not good at all. Beyond the fact that we lose MB for the year, it also creates something of a roster management issue in the future. Looking forward to next year we will have a roster with

    Sr - Harris, Mitchell
    Jr - Atkins, Jesperson
So - Anderson, Brogdon, Nolte, Tobey, Barnette, Jones, Gill
    Fr - Hall, Perrantes

So we are pretty much guaranteed of seeing at least one if not more transfers out of the class of 2016.
