Lacrosse question

  • What can we expect from the Cavs this year.
I see we have a first year in goal.
    What are our strengths/weaknesses.

I would guess we are a quarterfinals/semifinals team at best.... A lot of youth out there...

I do not see the cohesion that we saw in the 2006 team... then again they were great... I just don't see it the past few years.

Could be that there is more parody in LAX and recruiting... kids aren't just going to SU, JH, and UVa anymore. I think its good for the game, but harder for Dom to field a great team.

Freshmen in goal, still relatively young on D. Scoring shouldn't be an issue, but the shots need to be on goal more - they need to take better shots. Matt White is the new hotness. The rest of the ACC is preseason ranked above us. Going to be a tough tough road, but I'd hope to at least still make the NCAAs. Who knows, if things come together, could still be a great team - but expectations should be (relatively) low - in terms of what we're used to. Still plenty of talent. New rules should help us.

No more "keeping it in" the smaller box when a stall warning is called. Instead, there's a 30 second shot clock once the stall is called, shot must be on goal to reset. The thinking is to speed to game up a little bit in the endgame, increase possessions.

  • I thought Marino was very impressive in goal, especially coming off an injury and making his first start as a first year. As usual, Dom has a lot of big athletic guys who can run. I think the questions are can we get in a rhythm on offense and gel on defense. We did a lot of ball watching Saturday and the cutter killed us all day. Losing McNamara for the year isn't going to help. Dom seems to do his best work when no one is looking at him to make a big run.

    Really good point.

Two other points I'd like to make:

    1) Chris LaPierre is a real joy to watch. If you've been standoffish about lacrosse in the past, come out to Klöckner and keep your eyeballs on #44. He'll win your over, and quickly.

    2) With this lacrosse program, the expectations should always be set at at the Final Four. As long as Starsia is our coach, we'll have the leadership and talent to challenge for the national championship.

Not that young on D, really. Prevas is a senior, McWilliams a junior. Hill and Riley are both junior SSDMs. New starters would be Danseglio as the third close-in D and Ottenbreit at LSM but both got their share of playing time last year.

It's the offense that's mostly new. But I really, really liked Nick O'Reilly's play against Drexel and I don't think he's getting talked about enough. Watch and see; nobody can really replace Stanwick but O'Reilly is going to surprise some people.

100% on that last one. My expectations are as long as Duke isn't in our bracket we should be in the title game every other year, at least.
