Sophomore guard is planning to transfer

CHARLOTTESVILLE—Virginia men’s head basketball coach Tony Bennett announced on Friday (Dec. 23) that sophomore guard KT Harrell (Montgomery, Ala.) is leaving the Cavaliers’ program.

“I was informed by KT and his parents today (Friday, Dec. 23) that he is planning to transfer,” Bennett said. “I was disappointed by his decision to leave Virginia. I was hoping he would stay, but I appreciate his contributions to our program and wish him the best in the future.”

The 6-4 Harrell has played in all 11 of Virginia’s games this season and started the first five. He is averaging 4.7 points and 1.0 rebound a game, while shooting 31.5 percent (17-54) from the field and 70.0 percent (14-20) from the free-throw line.

“I’m grateful for my experience at Virginia and for my teammates and coaches,” Harrell said. “They were very kind and good to me. I wish them the best.”

As a freshman during the 2010-11 season, Harrell played in all 31 of Virginia’s games and started 15 of them. He averaged 8.0 points and 2.1 rebounds a game. Harrell shot 42.3 percent (91-215) from the field, including 42.1 percent (24-57) from three-point range, and 64.2 percent (43-67) from the free-throw line.

  • I hate to see anyone leave, especially someone like KT who was initially so excited and
willing to buy into what TB is doing here. Don't know any of the reasons, but I hope
whatever they are, he finds a place where he is happy and successful.

And on a related note, does this potentially open a 2013 schollie for another Stith?

  • Wow... Was afraid that might happen. Very highly touted but just wasn't playing under the pressure.

Sorry JO, I accidentally down voted you in my sadness... Not the gift I was looking for this Christmas.

Will he be enrolled elsewhere next semester?

  • I respect his decision but I wish he'd fight for the minutes. Minutes aren't given to you and he was pressing so hard when he got into games. I wonder if this affects Jesperson's redshirt (I doubt it).

  • Man, that sucks...best of luck to him.

  • That really bums me out. I was sure he was going to find his stride after the Christmas break. Best wishes to him although I wish he would have stayed.

Too bad, but it looked like the hand writing was on the wall...

As TB continues to recruit elite athletes into the program...some will rise to the top and others will fall by the wayside.

I wish KT nothing but good things and hopefully he will land in a situation that will allow him to flourish!

If everyone only settled for good enough... would anything ever really be good enough?

  • I really hope playing time didn't influence his decision... He lost his own minutes because he took poor shots, was careless with the ball, and did not have the mental aspect of the game to be an effective ACC basketball player... Best of luck to him, and I'm sorry he has to go...

I actually think the redshirt comes off. Somebody has to be ready if something happens to Joe or Malcolm. Might as well start getting him minutes when we can.

Best of luck to KT. I think if he stayed four years he would have hit his stride his third and fourth year like JR.

  • Wish KT all the best. He seems like a fine person and was an enthusiastic member of the team. But the handwriting was on the wall. He just wasn't as good as Malcolm, and his game fell a notch from last year. I think it's the right move for him.

  • This news really, really bums me out. I thought KT was very good last year as a freshman. Obviously this year he has been in a slump, I really just wish he gave it some time and worked his way through it. He has the game, no doubt about it. Best of luck to him where ever he goes, some team will be getting a solid transfer!

  • Just think about it. Out of Bennet"s first big class of six, only two were good, one of whom everyone thought was as an after-thought.

  • Makes me think his family expects Justin Anderson ( and brogdon) to walk right in and take sammy's minutes next year. Sad to see him leave bc he was a guy that could create his own shot.

    Mr Faded Glory1

  • So now we have 4 guys for 3 spots, unless we take the shirt off Jesperson. This really hurts the team. I understand he's got to do what's best for him, but, as a fan, I'm disappointed. Good luck to KT.

    Wahoo1919

  • Given Sammy's injury history, I don't see how we can afford to leave PJ's shirt on. He needs to be ready to play minutes and that starts with playing against the two cupcakes next week.

    sixdayshraf

  • Damn, probably the one player I didn't want to see leave the most. I know he's struggled and lost some confidence but I as well think he would have come out of it and pushed for major mins during ACC play. Hate to see him go as I think wherever he lands is going to get a heckuva player even if he hasn't showed that yet this year.

  • KT seemed to be playing with major distractions affecting his game. He is just too good a player to perform the way he did this season without something going on off the court. Not trying to start any rumors or speculation. Wish him well wherever he lands.
