Jontel..

  • We or most of us bitched about his play. He played very well tonight and kept us in the game. Without him and Joe the doors are blown off. Akil had a terrible game.

  • I'd still trade Jontel for Devon Hall and London Perrantes. In a heartbeat.

I will respectfully disagree. When the shot clock gets under 10 seconds and you have Jontel taking the last shot (multiple times tonight) makes zero sense to me. He is the last person IMO that needs to be taking this shot. Give it to JA or Joe and let them take it to the hole and try and draw a foul. 8 out of 10 times he does this it is an ill advised shot or missed high banking layup.

Akil on the other hand, well. I cannot understand the lack of soft touch he AND Darion have around the bucket. Both missed easy, I mean easy layups or put backs. IMO this is what ultimately costs us games.

  • Jontel is one of those players that part of me says what the @$($ is he doing and then within minutes say nice play or great defense.. He is very frustrating at times but I still believe he is a leader..to be continued...

  • I like Jontel's hustle, gritty play, and his leadership. If he could shoot a mid range jumper he would be a great point guard. I wonder sometimes how much the 4 on 5 offensive reality hurts us. I know we get stuffed when time runs down and our PG can't pull up and hit a jumper. On balance, I am a Jontel fan, but am looking forward to Brogdon's return and the arrival of our two guard recruits next year.

  • I thought Jontel and Akil cost us this game. How can you have a point guard who can't even pull up at the free throw line? His shot is worse than bad and it really hinders us on offense when his defender can sag off of him. I'm with wackyhoo, wish TB would give Justin or Joe the ball at end of shot clock. At least those guys can hit foul shots. I know that JE plays good D and held Larkin for stretches, but we really need an ACC level pg.

As for Akil, I've been very impressed with his growth and you can tell he works on his game. Tonight, however, he was made to look like he was playing out of position. After getting his shot blocked, which wouldn't have happened if he'd made a strong bball move, he was useless on offense.

I'm excited to see what this team can look like with proper pg play and bodies to throw down low.

They did cost us the game, Akil missed WAY too many easy layups and I didnt see Jontel do anything but miss shots on the offensive end. It will be nice when we have a PG that commands respect on O and can actually shoot. If I were the opposing coach I would never drop into the lane on D when Jontel has the ball, push out on the shooters and make him finish......and we'd lose by double digits easy.

He does play good defense and gets a few loose balls/rebounds a game with his strength and quickness. Kid should have played tailback IMO.

  • Don't understand why some keep bashing Jontel. He is what he is--strong defender, leader on and off the court, knows and can execute TBs system, not a great shooter. His injury this year really set him back--he's just getting back to where he ended up last year.

He could have bolted when TB was brought on board. He didn't. I think he's probably done everything the coaching staff has asked him to do. Is he the best point guard in the ACC--not by a long shot. Is he our best point guard at the moment--no question.

I continue to support him and the rest of this team.

  • Seven assists and one turnover.....Jontel must have done SOMEthing right. We all agree he's got his limitations but he was not the problem last night. Akil could have played a better game (why oh why oh why did you step away from Reggie Johnson???) but going 3-for-10 is partly a function of the fact that he's the only real post threat we have right now, going against three gigantic battleships in Miami's post.

  • I love Jontel but once we are down 4-5 points in the final 30 seconds or so teams basically don't guard him and double Harris. Even if he wants a free layup they will give it to him. This can't happen.

  • It's not that we don't support him; it's that his glaring weaknesses are costing us scoring opportunities in every game! He is a point guard that can;t shoot and is not a great free throw shooter. That allows defense to lay off him and concentrate on our scorers!

Jontel missed a few lay ups taht he needs to hit, since he is not a factor with his jump shot. Also, Akil missed some critical ones as well. Granted, on one reverse Gamble simply pushed him to the ground, but it wasn't called. All in all, we acquitted ourselves quite well. The fact that there was an 11 to 3 foul discrepancy in the 2nd half didn't help us either. You can't tell me that wasn't dubious. Regardless, we lost because we didn't score well enough. Miami is a really good team, and they are BIG in the front court.

  • The offense we run a true lead guard will kill it. I stopped counting at a dozen last night the opportunities a true lead guard had to hit a wide open 12-15 jump shot. Playing four on five on the offensive end is not very fun. With that being said we make the tourney and if I am coaching another team I would not want to see us their bracket. I really think we can do some damage.
