Jay - Baseball Question

  • After a tough weekend against the heels, do you think Oak will tinker with his starting lineup a bit? He yanked Shifflett and Harrington in the middle of games 2 and 3 for Downes and Papi, respectively. While Papi didn't deliver, Downes sure did...

Having watched all 3 games, UVA played a horrendous game in the field on Saturday and frankly deserved to lose that game. I think with better execution on the bases and a few timely hits they would have won games 1 and 3, but nobody other than Bruno and Downes hit this weekend.

Also, thoughts on Taylor? He had a miserable series both in the field and at the plate. You think he's pressing a little? He's way too good to play like he did against UNC.

Getting swept at home means the boys need to handle Duke this weekend to get back on track...

  • as Downes gets healthy he will continue to play more. Shifflett is the better defender in center, but Downes is a far better hitter. Papi continues to struggle and is likely to stay in the part-time player role against RHP. Gragnani is a key to the team and his return would boost the batting order greatly.
I don't get the sense that the program is in panic mode after losing to three games to one of the favorites to advance to the College World Series. UNC was in this position two years ago when they boasted a host of young faces. It is a cycle in a sport that offers partial scholarships and is impacted by the MLB draft.
Taylor looked as if he was looking to get walked every plate appearance. He will be fine. It is a long season for the players and a weekend slump will happen to the great ones.
The Duke series got a lot more interesting following the sweep and the jumbled standings in the ACC. Virginia will get a tough challenge against Duke pitcher Marcus Stroman in the opener. The other two games should go in the favor of the Wahoos on paper.

Just want to say that your contributions to this site are awesome Jay. UVA is really lucky to have people like you and Jamie covering their athletic programs. Really helps put us fans closer to the programs. Thanks!

  • Great stuff, Jay, much appreciated! Overall, I think the fellas played decent ball this past weekend, save for a sloppy showing in the field on Saturday afternoon. Carolina's lineup is pesky.

Any idea when Gragnani will be available to return?
