I had a thought related to the transfers out of our BB program.

  • I have in the past related Bennett's program building to what Krzyzewski did at Duke. For those who were around back then like me, you may recall that K's first full class had 5 or 6 recruits, no big stars, all roughly in the top 150 range. When he started bringing in the better classes, all but one member of that original class transferred out.

It seemed to work out OK for him.

  • I may be wrong but I thought K's original class in 1982? was Dawkins, Alarie, Bilas, Henderson, and Williams. Maybe that was his second, or even third.

Nope. He had a class before that. I think 6 guys. The Dawkins/Alarie class came the following year.

You may remember there was a big sports illustrated article about all the "near misses" K had that year, the last of which was Jimmy Miller who picked the Hoos.

I think the best player from that group was a kid who ended up transferring to Detroit and had a decent college career there. One guy stayed and was a role player on the Dawkins/Alarie teams.

  • After going to the game last night, I felt almost sorry for KT, as he I think he could have been a really big contributor for this team this year and especially next. I think when he was playing well, he and Brogdon would have been a tough matchup in the backcourt for the other teams

To add, K started at Duke in 1980. Alarie and Dawkins arrived in 1982.

K coached 80 - 81 team, then his first class which was 81 included the 5 or 6 guys I refer to. Then he coached the 81 - 82 team, and his 82 class had Alarie, Dawkins, Bilas, etc. It was the 82 - 83 team with those guys as a frosh that we blew out in the ACC tourney by 50 with Ralph playing a grand total of 14 minutes in that game.

  • G - I went back and checked the names from my old ACC Handbooks. I'd love to be able to back you up, but I can't. It was a different era, and you can't really make a comparison, but in his first two classes combined (the pre-Dawkins/Alarie/Bilas/Henderson class), Coach K recruited a total of five players; only one of them transferred out before completing his eligibility.

Coach K's first recruiting class (1980-81) consisted of one player: Doug McNeely. McNeely was not heralded. He spent his full four-year career at Duke.

His second recruiting class (1981-82) consisted of four players: Todd Anderson, Jay Bryan, Dan Meagher, and Greg Wendt. OF those four, only Wendt transferred out. Anderson, Bryan, and Meagher spent their full 4-year careers at Duke.

Anderson averaged 14.5 mpg and 3.2 ppg as a freshman; 10.5 mpg and 2.1 ppg as a soph; 3.7/0.5 as a junior and 3.9/0.7 as a senior.

Bryan averaged 7.0 mpg and 1.7 ppg as a freshman. After that, it was 3.4/1.3; 2.9/0.6 and 2.4/0.6

McNeely averaged 4.5 mpg and 0.9 ppg as a freshman; 22.7 mpg and 4.6 ppg as a soph; and then slipped back to 7.5/2.0 as a junior and 11.4/2.4 as a senior.

Meagher, of course, played a significant role throughout his college career and is notable as perhaps the dirtiest player in ACC history, having admitted to spitting in the face of UVA's Tom Sheehey during a game in University Hall. Not only was he not vilified or disciplined for having done so, the Cameron Crazies lauded him for it and taunted Sheehey the next time he came to Cameron with chants of "Meagher spit in your face," for which the Duke students were complimented by that greatest of sportsmen, Mike Krzyzewski.

Oh well, I knew he had a class before the Alarie Dawkins class, but for some reason I thought they left and were never heard from again. Wendt is the guy I was thinking of who transferred to Detroit and had a decent career.

Sadly, I don't have my ACC handbooks going quite that far back. I wish I did.

Of course, Meagher spit in Sheehy's face after Ralph played 68 minutes against Duke in that rout in the ACC tourney. Or something like that according to K.

If you want the old handbooks let me know and I will save them for you. They're taking up too much room in our overly cluttered house, and I've just decided that the time has finally come to get rid of them. Today is the first time I've looked at them in probably five years, and I can't justify keeping them around if I'm not going to spend any more time with them than that.

I have them back to the late 1970s - maybe 1977 or 1978.

  • Great post G, I have no doubt Bennett will build a lasting program. fwiw

If G doesnt want some of them, I would love some.....I am a younger generation HOO fan, but I love collecting stuff like that, at least if I could get a few...be awesome! Really enjoyed the history lesson in this post, always cool to hear war stories from UVA games in those days....thanks guys!

  • UHoo, great stuff thanks for taking the time to do that research. I had remembered Ferry spitting at Sheehey, but I have been wrong about everything else in this thread.

To me these transfers are worrying. And I really think that they will materially hurt the team this year - I am actually less optimistic right now at 14 - 1 than I was at the start of the season.

But this issue aside, I am very hopeful for UVa hoops and very confident in Bennett.
