Disappointing news

  • http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/cavaliers-journal/post/virginia-not-expected-to-sell-out-its-chick-fil-a-bowl-ticket-allotment/2011/12/13/gIQAh9GQsO_blog.html

Hope we can prove this wrong. This type of thing doesn't help our prestige amongst bowl selection next year. Feel bad for Mike London and co who have done their end of the bargain to get fans in the seats.

  • We will not prove this wrong....but from here on out it is about the perception we create for ourselves. Sure, we did not sell out our allotment, but neither has 90%+ of the schools participating in bowl games. Internally we have sold about 33% more tickets than VT. VT has sold more tickets than Florida, OSU and other monster programs!

We need our admin to hit the press and gloat about what we have sold...not what has fallen short.

We need our fans in ATL need to be loud, proud and in their gear packing restaurants and attractions spending money.
Our fans also need to bring their A game into the GA Dome...as does our squad!

  • Why did we get an 18k alottment and Auburn only 16k?

  • It was explained in the article. It is due to the ACC having the higher selection from within the respective conferences. ACC#2 vs SEC#6.

ACC deal gives us more, because it is a better "tie-in" with the ACC than the SEC, I believe. Normally, the Peach Bowl gets a 2nd or 3rd place ACC team and SEC is 5th or 6th? I think the ACC gets a bigger payout, too, which skews the tickets allotted in our favor. Any combination of those factors.

  • Honestly if bowls gave tickets with better locations to schools, the schools would sell tickets more easily. It's hard to blame a fan for buying tickets in a better location from the secondary market instead of buying end zone seats from the school. I am still impressed with selling 14K through UVA. Hotel and restaurant sales are more important to the bowls anyways... that's what really stimulates the economy in a city.

  • The bowl is its own entity, they don't care about the hotels and restaurants, their focus is centered on ticket sales.

Now for the city of Atlanta you are right.

  • I am sure they will write a follow-up if we do sell out.

I am sure the bowl sells advertising though, and the better the community around them does, probably the more they can get in advertising. I am also sure the bowl gets money from the concessions sold at the games, so the more fans present, the more money they make.

Bowl committees ALWAYS have representation from the local chamber of commerce and general business community. That's why they commission those economic impact studies.

  • For what it's worth, Auburn has a much bigger following in atlanta. I went onto their website and they still have not sold out of their allotment yet. The fact that our numbers are about the same as Auburn's should bode well for us in the future. I think we're putting in a good showing. It would be nice to sell out though.

  • I know I'm going to take some heat but frankly I'm going (buying 4 tickets) and I just didn't want to sit in the end zone upper deck. I can get near midfield tickets in the lower level for about $100 per ticket and I just don't want to travel to the ATL and sit in the upper deck. If the bowls want to sell more tickets for the schools they should at least offer a block of better seats. Ridiculous.
