Name a time when you had great expectations for any uva sports team and the uva curse spoiled the success and made you say what if... mine is the cory alexander first injury.what a team that could of been. The jr injury in the ncaa made me sick. I bring this up cus i feel it will happen this year plus i heard Teven hurt his ankle. Im pretty sure it not something big but still i heard he was doing his thing and now this.
Every single season in every single sport.
A better question would be, name a time when that didn't happen
02' hoops squad. I believe they were up to #4 in the nation at one point and failed to make the tournament. I could be wrong but did Roger Mason have a nagging injury that slowed him that season?
Two words that I cannot stand to say even to this day- Scott Sisson.
I'll show what an old-timer I am and mention the '81 basketball team. We had all the ingredients for a national championship until Lee Raker went down with a deep thigh injury (courtesy of Mark West from ODU). In the Final 4 against North Carolina Raker was trying, but had limited mobility and nobody else could guard Al Wood who went off on us for 39 points. I will always believe that we were that one injury away from a title.
Second on the list is the '90 football team. An injury to our starting tight end led indirectly to a loss to Georgia Tech when we were #1. They went on to win a national championship that year, and I truly believe if we had won that game it would have been us instead.
This isn't that fun of a discussion.
Mine would be 1998 when we had risen to #7 in the country. We had TJ leading the offense and AP leading a pretty good defense. Aaron Brooks was the QB. TJ was running wild and we were putting a beating on GT on the road to go 6-0 when Brooks made a bonehead play (or 2) and the wheels came off the cart. We lose the game and drop out of the Top 10. Next game we win vs. NCSU, but that is the game where AP tears up his knee. Later that year we get blown out at FSU in a "statement game" and then ultimately blow the Peach Bowl vs. Georgia after being up 21-0 in that one too. It was a heartbreak season on many fronts. The only saving grace of the season was the massive comeback win in Gobbleville.
Trivia note from that '81 basketball season. UVa was the last team to win the NCAA consolation game that year. I believe we beat LSU. They stopped playing the game after that season. When you lose in the Final 4, no one wants to play another game.
I must break you!
That's my moment as well. It's the only time I've ever witnessed UVa lose a game in person. Obviously I don't make many games these days.
I think adam hall and majestic mapp was also injured. Remember mason shoulder kept popping out that year
Im not familiar. Please explain
He was the kicker who made the winning FG against UVa when they were ranked # 1 in the country. I think it was 1990, but might have been in '91.
He kicked the winning FG against us a couple of times, but in '90 that was the real heart-breaker. As I remember, he kicked a 47 yarder into the wind with less than a minute to go. I've hated him ever since.

He beat us on kicks in 90 and 91.
Both would have ended in ties had he missed...so we would not have won either.
37 yarder, see video
