Then we suck anyway.
Nah man, I hear you. The last six years did a lot of damage to my level of confidence in our football program.
But I'm getting over it and embracing the challenge of hosting Oregon. And I like the idea that we're trying to schedule some really tough opposition. Even if we lose by 100, there's a certain level of respect to be earned from not being afraid to play the elite programs in college football.
We get a bye after BYU/Oregon. I like it.
"Just gotta keep balling out"
Not doubting you but how do you know this? Do you have a good idea of the entire schedule?
I'm all for playing the best teams, but the timing is off. I feel like we've hit the reset button with a good portion of our program. In a few years when Tenuta, Obie, etc. have a chance to impact this program, bring on Oregon, bring on Alabama, bring on anybody.
But let's give this young talent we're bringing in a chance to develop, and let's get a few winning seasons / bowl games under our belts first.
If we go 5-7 this year, the perception of our program will be that we've stalled, and our momentum on the recruiting trail will hit a major snag due to consecutive bowl-less seasons.
I just hope Mike and this coaching staff have been guaranteed two more years, because it's not fair for anyone to lose their heads over not going to a bowl this year.
Not necessarily. The ACC could give us Clemson that week if they want to. None of the ACC dates are set yet.
How? How does this really help?
With you Mr. E. Take your shots with the big boys. I'll take that any day over the walkovers. I understand
the logic, but I've always hated the Beamer school of padding your schedule with patsies.
Count me in as being pretty psyched about this. At least we're not scheduling some boring ass cupcake. Fill the stands, let's get behind our boys and see what happens. Go Hoos.
And if this means we're not playing in the Mrs. Smith's Pecan Pie Bowl, who really gives a shit? I know I don't.

It's like the powers that want London out are setting him up like a bowling pin.
Just to clarify, is the rumor that Oregon will be our 8th home game for 2013, along with BYU, VMI, Ball State, Clem, VT, Duke and GT? Wow, what a way to sell season tickets.
Man a lot of us have been on these boards together for alot of years. I'm shocked at all the posters saying this is a stupid idea to schedule Oregon, do you guys want to play big boy football or don't you? I'm ashamed right now at some of the responses. I don't think alot of you realize the press this gives us. Even if we take an ass whippin it's just another step for the young players getting experience they will get alot more out of an Oregon loss then a VMI blowout win. Who say's we are going to lose anyway. Likely yes but not a given.
WAHOO 4 LIFE!!
I'm okay with scheduling Oregon. They make everyone look like fools so it's no big deal if we lose, and on the <1% chance that we do win, we'll have a lot to gain just like Stanford when they beat UO.
The problem is that now we've now scheduled 3 good OOC opponents & 1 elite OOC opponent. Whatever wins you think UVA is entitled to, the fact remains that UVA hasn't been a consistently good program since 2005 and we've flat out sucked 3 out of the last 4 years. We've been losing OOC toss-ups. We gain nothing by losing to good teams. On the flipside, winning, even if it's to bad teams, gets us bowl games and recruiting momentum. Iron sharpening iron my ass. A nebulous recruiting quote is not what we want to base program building on.
1) gives them an early (earlier?) game that recruits could come see/ will be broadcast at least regionally.
2) lets them tell recruits "we will come east and your family can come see you"
3) helps them continue to build their brand.
4) I would imagine their new coach will not take the pedal off of the gas (wanting to establish he is as good/better than Kelly).
The other side is the old Bobby Bowden "we'll play anyone, anywhere, anytime" model (previously posted).
I hope we win. They have had a tough go with Stanford...which is hopefully our model.
"See, we'll even schedule east coast games so your family can see you play much easier" is how it helps them. I'm sure they didn't hesitate to schedule this game.
Please stop. You're making too much sense.
It's not the bullshit bowl that matters now; it's a winning, bowl-eligible season AND the 15 extra bowl practices that matter. EVERYONE wants UVa FB to be relevant again. I don't see how getting our mudholes stomped by the ducks gets us there.
So you mean Oregon scheduling 1 east coast game in how many years (bet they haven't traveled this way in 15+ years) translates to a recruit picking them over us in the hopes it happens again MAYBE once in his 4 years? No f'ing way.
Listen, Orgeon's success sells itself...if we're head to head with them for a recruit it's because a) the recruit is a beast they REALLY want and 2) the recruit knows how f'ing good Oregon is already. Standford hasn't been to play us and they get plenty of kids from this area for the same reasons. USC came here and hasn't gotten a Virginia kid since.
Worrying about it helping them recruit is one of the more ridiculous points in the debate.
And to those who are worried about it making or breaking our bowl hopes...we return a boat load of players from our 2 deep and are in year 4 of London's tenure, there is no way that one big OOC game should have that big of an impact. And hell, even if/when we lose, it may hep us in preparing for other teams we face. I've said it before and will say it again, EVERYONE associated with UVA football, fans/players/coaches/admin, needs to start raising their expectations. If London can't piece together 6 wins outside of this game, he needs to go anyway. The schedule is not that tough. Duke, MD, VMI, Ball State better all be wins. VT damn well NEEDS to be a win. And you mean to tell me he can't find another from there???? Quit giving the guy excuses...it's time to become better than the past 2 decades have made everyone else think we are.
Bottom line is 5-6 win teams don't deserve to go to a bowl game. Those games are a total joke. Nobody outside of the two programs playing in the game actually give a rip.
Schedule the big dogs. Sell Tickets. Set the bar high.
The team and the fans get up for games like this. I could care less about watching us play some no-name school. I want to see ballers on both sides.
I am all for playing the big boys but play them when you have the team to be competitive and next year we will not. Why cant we schedule Wofford, Charleson Southern, Odu, other automatic wins. Look at Bama's ooc schedule and fsu too.
