My little sister is a Junior in High School (and of my brother and I, she is the smartest cookie). She is applying to four schools, William and Mary, UVa and two safeties: Tech and Mary Washington. She wants to be a biology major and specifically student bio (physical) anthropology (she takes after me as an anthro major!). For anyone who doesn't know what that means, basically she wants to study Human Evolution. William and Mary is her top choice, and my mother wants her to go there badly. She just visited Tech, my brother did an excellent job of recruiting her (and Tech did too). They gave her this folder on the bio department blah blah.
HELP! UVa is now THIRD in her choices (even though they have the best bio program).
My parents think UVa is a bad fit for her, she is more mousey than me and NOT into greek life. The problem is she's visiting UVa this Friday (I am giving her the tour) and I am worried because UVa is TERRIBLE at advertising their school (it advertizes itself attitude). For example, she is NOT going on the regular tour because my mother and I both hated the tour. The bio department said on their website that they give tours...I called the poc listed and they said they don't and never have!
UVa is NOT helping it's cause...

JMU for the win; new science buildings BLING BLING
"Just gotta keep balling out"
UVa actually has a new lab building near the stadium...but points for being funny
My sister turned down UVa for JMU. I thought she was high but it actually turned out to be pretty good for her, probably the best fit. I loved going to UVa and while there I soaked up as much as I could about lots of things, the diversity of which I don't think I would have been exposed to at any other state school, and out-of-state or private university tuition was not an option. However, I ended up majoring in History at UVa really by default. I probably should have been in Environmental Studies but didn't discover that department until relatively late in my career and it such a pain in the ass to stay beyond 4 years at UVa that I just finished out in History and then got graduate degrees in Biology and Marine Sciences, respectively. For my career (fisheries scientist), I actually probably would have been better off at Tech or ODU than UVa. The point of all this is UVa is a great school but folks growing up in VA are blessed with myriad options of solid to great state universities and programs from which to chose.
True, UVA does HORRIBLE tours..they certainly don't give prospective students anything to be blown away by.
I got my undergrad and grad degrees in bio from the University. I'd suggest contacting the grad school folks there in the Bio Department. They are far more active in recruiting talent to the University. I doubt any graduate student there would mind taking a few minutes to give a potential undergrad student a tour. It would give your sister a better idea of what real biological research is beyond the theory courses she will be exposed to as an undergrad.
Trim the fat off your soul.
William and Mary is a great school. Let her choose her own path. If UVA can't make their own case, they don't deserve to have her.
Bill and the Bitch.... just saying
