Blanked Cal 4-0 and advanced to the Quarters. Next up is Tennessee.
Tennessee is when, Saturday?
Yeah, thats right.
Is this the year?
I'm honestly not a real big tennis fan, but I'd love to see the guys break through for their first championship this season.
If you look at the individual rankings, we should be the favorite, even though we're seeded #2 behind UCLA. We've thought it was THE YEAR several times now, so I'm hesitant to say this is the year, but it sure looks good on paper. UCLA could pose a threat, and USC is always dangerous in May. I think those are the only 2 squads with enough depth to give us a challenge.
Tennessee has the top-ranked player in the country, and Domijan is ranked 2, so that #1 Singles match will be one to watch tomorrow.
I think the good news is that UCLA, Ohio St and USC (West) are all on the other side of the bracket. We'll only have to face the winner from that group. We've got to beat Tenn. and then probably UGA to reach yet another finals.
Domijan plays on the 2 line for Virginia. Jenkins will play Libietis.
The rankings are not the greatest representation for who is actually the best. Right now, Henrique Cunha (Duke's #1 player) is the hottest player in the country. Blaz Rola, OSU's #1 player, is also very good, but because he played in pro events in the fall, he doesn't have the results to be in the Top 5. Similarly, Mitchell Frank on Virginia is easily one of the ten best players in the country, but because he skipped the fall events to rehab an injury, he isn't ranked as high as he would have been.
Is there TV coverage today? What time and channel?
Virginia wins doubles point. Up 1-0 vs. Tenn.
Virginia wins 4 of 6 1st sets in singles.
Domigan 6-2, 6-3 - UVa up 2-0
Shane wins 2nd set - match will go to 3rd set
Jenkins breaks and takes 2nd set @ #1 singles. Going to 3rd set.
Virginia closes out with 4-0 win
Next up is Georgia. They beat Pepperdine 4-2.
Interesting UGA made it this far. I don't follow tennis but they had a front page story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution sports section about a week ago when their best player simply quit the team and left the country. He'd already transferred from another school where he didn't fit in. Part I remember is that he walked into coaches office with a 3 page letter he wanted to read that explained his reasons for leaving. Coach stopped him immediately and said basically I don't want to hear it, if you're gone then just get out of here now. They gave him a bunch of preferential treatment and didn't apply team rules to keep him happy but it still didn't work. AJC article implied they were a championship team but had no chance without him and would be happy to pick up a few wins.

Those of us that follow the sport closely would say the AJC was being a tad generous.
Even with Singh, the Dawgs looked like the 5th best team in the country. Maybe 4th, considering the way USC sort of fell apart towards the end of the year. UGA is the only team in the Top 5 that does not have a win over another Top 5 team.
Speaking of USC, they lost to Ohio State in the quarters. Historically speaking, our biggest obstacle has been eliminated.
Ohio State might have a little home court advantage in Illinois. Originally, it didn't look like they had the depth to compete for a title. However, if they upend USC and UCLA, I will feel differently.
Things are far from over.
Of the 3 remaining matches, UVa trails in 1 and is tied in the other 2.
Domijan breaks his opponent and is now up 5-4 and serving for the match.
Triple match point for Domijan
UVa wins 4-1!
Ohio State and UCLA are knotted at 3-3, with the deciding match tied up late in the 3rd set.
Nice. Tough win. 4-1 looks like we rolled. Nice to beat Georgia.
Hoos will face UCLA in the Final.
Automator, would you care to share your thoughts heading into the Final?
