and a few posters try to challenge that assessment but i did not think we would play so poorly. i am disappointed and embarrassed with our play today. also it will be very hard to convice kids to decommit and transfer to our program after watching this game. it hard for uva fans to admit what im about to say but maybe we didnt belong in the tournament. we just had too much adversity to overcome. i want to wish sammy and mike good luck with their future but i am ready for the next chapter. for the guys that are returning use this blowout as motivation and work hard to better your games and get healthy. jontel it is said every year but next year this definetly need to happen without a proven low post player, u have to make jumpers. u are hurting us with your lack of a perimeter game. decision making should be improved also. joe get healthy and continue to improve on your getting to the basket skills. malcolm get healthy and come back ready do be one of the leaders and top scorers. paul i feel like you may get lost with the new recruits so you have to expand your game if you want to get on the court. akil and darion just work on everything and hopefully mike curtis will put mass on your. im tired of these lean big men. to all the new recxruits come in ready to contribute. we need your to overachieve. coach bennett you need to take a second look at your deliberate style and usage of the bench. u should speed it up a little to get easy baskets with our lack of low post players and play more guys. also work on your in game coaching and become more energized during games. i feel like im watching phil jackson. we need energy. ok thats it for this year. thanks for the hard work guys. im glad your never gave up and didnt quit like those other bums
All good points, I got upset but we were for sure out of gas. I think the situation we found/find ourself in causes me to both praise and question Tony B. at the same time. To his credit he overcame a tremendous amount of adversity and brought us to the tourney with VERY little talent on the team. On the other hand I look to next year and question what we have to show for it. Our program is not necessarily in better shape than it was in the past (other than an ncaa tourny blowout on our resume). I'm measuring this in regards to returning talent. We have had many transfers and again it seems like it will be a few years before our team makes the tourney again, which is the exact place we said we were in when Tony first got here. He is a GREAT coach but he needs to recruit talent and keep it here or we will never jump to the next level.
Tugs, I agree with some of your comments and disagree with other. Yes, we deserved to be a tournament team based on our body of work. Yes, the team will continue to mature and make better decisions. Joe, Brogden, and Mitchell will make huge strides in the off-season. We have a good class coming in. Bennett's style is why we brought him here to Charlottesville. It is what it is. Many of our shots were wide open. They just didn't go down. It's going to happen to the best teams. Learn from it and move on. Personally, I think our team next year will be better than what people are predicting here. Yes, we will be young but I do think we will play into the tournament with a better bench and a huge upside for 2013-2014.
One of the things that didn't happen, couldn't happen, was the point you mention about maturing. With the high level of injuries and defections (over almost 20 years), this program has not been able to do any maturing on the court. While other teams were steadily building toward something better in March, we were denied that. Starting out with 11, then 2 defections and 3 broken bones in a season will routinely give that result. Even UNC with a full roster and 7 Mickie D's still available after 4 fairly recent Mickie D attrites, the injury loss of McDonald and Strickland, perhaps Henson, will not have an easy ride and will find some tough times due to that maturity issue when they face other teams with long, healthy rosters that have indeed matured.
If TB goes into the next season with the current 10 on scholie or less if there be an attrite.......
You overreact way too much after losses. Asking Bennett to change his style is a joke. Only reason we are in the tournament is because if Bennett's principles. We had too many injuries and too many transfers. Plain and simple. Tony is not changing his style if play so stop harping on that. If you don't like Bennett's system, you might want to follow a different team. How did the last two systems work out for UVA? There is a consistent formula for success at UVA and it starts with tough defense.
This is ridiculous. I hate the style of basketball we play, I don't watch other games with teams that play like us. But I watch ours because its UVA. But by your logic I should go be a fan of some other team based on that? I like Oregons offense in football and don't like pro style so I should just be a fan of them instead? Liking or disliking the system your school runs has nothing to do with being a fan of them or not...
No he should go follow another team because he continuously complains about it and thinks that is why we lose. Why complain about something that will never change? You may not like it, but I hope you realize it is our best shot to win. Why complain about Bennett, when he is pretty much the sole reason we are in this position with the cast of characters and all the injuries we had?
I still question anyone that hates our style of play. Do you not like winning? Do you think we should run like UNC or run and gun like Duke? We don't have the players to do that and we never will. Bennett's style of play has been proven to work at the highest level of basketball and is built on solid fundamentals. Who doesn't like fundamental basketball?
I have no problem with most of your posts tugard. But right now the last thing I want to read is see I told you so posts or this guy needs to get better or we suck at this or we need to improve. This coaching staff wants to win and knows basketball better than ANY of us do. I don't see any D-1 coaches here who've taken their team to the elite 8 like Tony has at Washington State. Just give it time and I wouldn't be going off about this.
its our best shot to win because he recruited for his system. that doesnt change the fact that in a different system with a different recruiting mindset and given some of the players he inherited when he got here we could be more successful because we wouldnt live and die by the 3. and we wouldnt have to rely on one player to carry us because faster paced systems spread the ball around rather than feeding it through scott and then having the rest of our players jack threes.
Hey Ryan...its year friggin' 3. Get real here. You haven't even seen Tony's own players reach upperclassmen yet and you're already knocking his system.
I agree with your argument about injuries and transfers and etc. I do not think that voicing an opinion is overreacting
necessarily. You say that Tony is not changing his style of play so forget it like I assume you know him personally
or know in advance what he will think about in the off season considering the recruits he will have coming in. I do agree
with having a strong defense but do not think it is the consistent formula for success without having the players that
can also score. To attract both of these is not easy since the large percentage of offensive players do not like playing
defense. Again it does start with defense which is TB's strong suit but wins are determined by who has the higher
number of points, unfortunately.
wow. if you show me where i said change his style i stop posting. i said speed it up a little and take a look at the deliberate style he play. never said change. we do need to speed it up some and take advatage of our deep perimeter. and u say i overreact.
grimlock i can point out so much wrong with your post it not worth it. such as playing faster mean not being fundamental but hey u just want to vent and im the target. i also will say that i never once said i hate our style i would forward every post i made on this site if you want so again u wrong. i never blame bennett for us losing i just think he should do some things differently. i know i have a reading comprehension problem but yours might out perform me. you totally made up things and the post is right in front of you.
huh. i cant say we need to improve. wow, i never said somebody suck. or your reading the post or high. when did i say i told u so. i believe u was the one that said this was an easy win and i said i hope im wrong but i dont see that. than i said i didnt think this was a good matchup but never thought we would be outplayed like this. where is the i told u so or we suck. i think i gave a great assessment about our players and what they should work on. i appreciate u responding but your need to stop makin up shet. as for u ryan it is ok to say u dont like something. if we didnt express opinions this board would be boring. that your opinion and stick by it. i think we should run a little more and play more players but hey that my opinion. people stop jumpin on others for posting an opinion. this is when i think jamie should get involve. if the team was perfect we wouldnt of gotten out as whip today. so voice your opinion my dude
i dont really see how these classes are going to improve us much. we will always live and die by the three and thats a dangerous way to play. coming in justin anderson is a baller but i just dont see how he'll fit into a style like this. he was orginally committed to a team that scored 77 points per game. we score 60 on a good day. there is a high chance he'll get misused. and to top it off we will have no scottt next year. who will score on the inside? unless you dont think we need inside scoring because youre perfectly ok with hunting threes all game. if he doesnt change the mindset of this team at least a little bit we will be in big trouble next season and you can book that.
if and when we get more athletic guys tony will adjust. his system this year could not have been better for this group. will we get superior players? who knows. lets hope we do. no matter what tony is a great coach.
i hope he does.
I didn't say it would be an easy matchup at all Tug. I said it would be tough but it could go our way. Coming on here not long after a loss like that and pointing out you were right...that makes it seem that way to me man. Sorry if that's not the case, but its just the way I see it. As for Ryan, he will be proved wrong in the end because he's just looking at the start of a big picture. Tony doesn't just recruit guys who can shoot only...we have had some unfortunate breaks in terms of transferring...we just need to be patient as a fanbase. I'm not jumping on him for his opinion at all, just stating strong disagreement and he's letting one loss get to him too much IMO. Anyway keep doing what you do tugard I do appreciate your opinion because you bring a different viewpoint man, but I was just not ready to here negative...there was enough negative in the outcome today.
Gotta give it time Ryan...that's all I'm saying. If this was year 5 even and you brought this up I'd agree with you. We don't have horses right now and we somehow made the tournament. Tony wants guys with all around game offensively, not people to jack 3's. You just see the product of injury, kids transferring, etc and assume this is what TB's regime is going to be like. Just please man take a breath and be patient.
to sum it up...I see Baillllleeyyy being better....but this is a god cheap piece of crystal.
A great answer to a dumb reporter by Bob Knight during the 1993 NCAA Tournament
Ryan, we tried this style with our two previous coaches and we fucking sucked.
thanks fam. u know u my dude. i just wanted to let yoiur know that i am just as hurt as your and my views on what need to be done for next year. but i appreciate you responding. that what this board should be about
Tried what style? I haven't even said what style of basketball I like, just that I hate hunting threes.
TB's style is not hunting 3's. Far from it. And we took significantly few 3s this year than last.
