Clifton Richardson

  • Sorry to rewind, but I can't get that helmet to head hit in the FSU game out of my head. That FSU kid is lucky to be alive. I know it was a live play, and sometimes these things happen, but Clifton's actions should not be encouraged. When you consider Clifton is a first year, I don't think a moment like that should go unaddressed. It's a simple lesson. If you see a player with their helmet off, don't go for the temple. On the other side of the coin, make sure your helmet is secure, because you might get injured badly if it falls off. I'm not sure how the staff handled that situation, but I'm glad the FSU kid is OK. Anything can happen in a live play when a player loses their helmet, and it's hard to say for sure that Clifton did it on purpose. Still, our season would have been different had the FSU player left the field on a stretcher. I'm all for this new aggressive style of play our team has, but I wouldn't want to see one of our players accidentally kill anyone on the football field. Not sure why I'm bringing this up now, but I just had to get that off my chest. I'm not really looking for a debate here or trying to stir the pot. You guys can discuss it if you'd like. I've said what I have to say.

  • What are you talking about?confused

  • Tim Jernigan (the FSU player) was still going after our ball carrier and attempting to make a play. If he's still playing why should we put a halo around him and allow him to pursue our players uninterrupted. I'm all for adopting a rule like lacrosse that prevents a player that loses equipment (helmet, stick) to continue playing and if they do they are penalized. Same should go for football but until then Richardson did nothing wrong in my book. Its a dangerous sport...

  • Exactly. If the FSU moron is going to go full steam for the rest of the play, then he gets to live with the consequences. Clifton should throw the hard block there no matter what.

Yeah it was definitely a legal hit. I loved that Clifton hit that guy. We need to have some swagger and physicality. Yes I know, the announcer claimed over and over again that it was helmet to helmet but I've never heard a more biased broadcast of a game in my life. Besides if it was helmet to head, I am pretty sure the guy would have been knocked out or at least concussed....

Sorry I didn't actually watch the game but are you saying that Clifton struck a kid who didn't have a helmet on with this helmet while throwing a block?

Surely with that sort of contact he would have probably fractured his skull/jaw (wherever he hit him) or at the very least been knocked out!

The fsu player was chasing the ball carrier. Richardson blocked him, helmet made a little contact with the players head, not square on him, no aiming or targeting. Nothing major. An I believe he came back in the game soon after. Kind of happens a lot.

  • I get tired of seeing helmets flying off so often. It is because they are not properly buckled. I almost would like to see it be a penalty if the helmet comes off but sometimes I guess it just happens. I still have my helmet from high school, a Bike air helmet. I put in on sometimes for kicks. Hard to believe my neck was ever strong enough to carry it. Those suckers were heavy.

  • Clifton was 100 percent in the right here. When you are out there playing football and theres a guy running around with his helmet off, hell yea your gona bust his skull. I wouldve loved to have a guy drop his helmet when I was playing, he wouldve woke up in a hospital bed. Its a violent contact sport, you hurt people. Thats what its about.

  • It's football and any coach or at least any good coach teaches that you play to the whistle, If there was so much concern for the player the refs should have blew the whistle, playing hard and playing dirty are two different things but their a fine line between the two. Clifton was playing hard not dirty.

  • I understand that play sticking in your mind and causing you to play the "What If" game, but your direction of blame is misguided. If you wanted to rail against the NCAA or the helmet manufacturers or whoever else for the helmet flying off that would be fine. But blaming Clifton for recognizing that Jernigan was still trying to make a play is not fair to him - his job is to continue blocking and protect the ball carrier. You can't fault a player for doing something that is entirely within the rules regardless of the potential outcome. And has been said before, there was no intent to injure on CR's part.

Yup! Also had one unsportsmanlike call including that personal foul. If you are going to dish it out then you better be able to take it.

First, -36. clap. Second, if memory serves me correctly there was a shot of London talking to Clifton on the sidelines after the play. I believe he was telling him to go low next time on a player without a helmet. Finally, the block and play by Clifton was perfectly fine. I do think the NCAA should examine a rule that makes a player dead on the field if his helmet comes off. If you continue to chase a player or be active in the play, 15 yard penalty.
