Anonymous ACC Coaches Comment on Virginia

  • A pretty interesting piece from SI's Seth Davis.

Here's what anonymous ACC coaches had to say about our Hoos:

"This team is just so limited offensively. Everything is predicated on tempo. The Cavaliers' best opportunity to score is an easy basket by Jontel Evans. He's so fast and strong, it's like a tailback going downhill. Their motion offense is good, but for 20 seconds they're not really attacking, they're just moving you around. And they are terrible against extended pressure because they don't attack it to score. I think they're running on fumes a bit. The fact that they don't have Assane Sene right now hurts. It doesn't overly affect their offense, but it does defensively. He makes the big-to-big doubles hard because he can throw out of them. You have to take away Mike Scott's perimeter shot. I'd rather him try to go inside because you can double team him there. Sammy Zeglinski is a great shooter, but he can also be a no-show occasionally. They're undersized in the backcourt, so teams like to post up their guards. The good news is they play tournament basketball all year, those grinder possession games."

The whole piece is wildly interesting, especially for those bracketheads among us who will be planing to make a small fortune this month in office pools. I definitely recommend the read.

Scoopon top teams from ACC, Big East, Big 12,Big Ten, SEC, Pac-12 - Seth Davis - SI.com

You are a hardcore college basketball fan. You don't want palaver and platitudes, clichs and coachspeak. You want to know what people who are in the know really know. You want the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the hardcore truth.

  • That all may be true, but they left out something , they win, 22 of them in fact.

  • I can give you the weakness to the UNC squad. Excessive flopping and getting gifts from refs. Not going to happen in the NCAA. They are going to have to actually beat teams with the clock running. If they're bigs get in foul trouble, they will lose by 20.

+1, and pressed the blue bloods with half a squad. I would like to see expansion of the running game and attacking pressure to score. Obviously thats how runners speed you up but a truly balanced team exploits that when it's prudent but yet still control tempo the majority of the game. I see this now and believe that as the personell fits better we'll see more offensive aggression. 22-8 and still no respect, 5 of 8 losses to top 25 none the less. Having 2 guards play so many mins that are <= six foot tall is a weakness, makes it even more amazing the results.

    This.

It's exactly why for all their incredible talent Duke and UNC don't win more championships, but more so UNC. They get gifts handed to them in the ACC where their bigs are allowed to body and go over the back of opposing players, getting no calls that no one else in the league gets. And, their guards are used to having touch fouls called anytime someone gets near them. The ACC has been a guard's league for a long time, but that on top of the clear preference Duke and UNC get hurts them tournament time when more physical play is allowed and the officiating is more even handed.
