Virginia pads up and practices

The shoulder pads were back in place as Virginia held its third practice of the spring on Friday.

Temperatures soared and humid conditions had the Cavaliers taking routine breaks to stay hydrated.

The addition of the pads, which were not allowed in the first two practices per NCAA rules, brought additional contact between players from the offensive and defensive line.

If the results from Friday were any indication, the defensive line has a decisive lead over a unit that is missing left tackle Oday Aboushi and right guard Luke Bowanko for the spring.

Credit the improvement of Justin Renfrow and the emergence of sophomore Chris Brathwaite for part of the success in the trenches.
