Virginia back in the mix for Sina

Jaren Sina

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After a brief hiatus, it looks as though Virginia is back in the mix for Gladstone (N.J.) Gill St. Bernards 4-star point guard Jaren Sina.

    • A few months ago, I received a ton of downvotes for some posts I made questioning what TB is doing in regards to PG recruiting. For me, this article brings those questions back into focus.

This kind of feels like James Robinson all over again: we target a guy highly ranked early, lead or seem to be able to close if we want, ease up on him (presumably) while we pursue other candidates, and then try to resurrect things late in the season. I hope this result is better than the last time.

This is not a rhetorical question but many follow this more closely than I do: what has changed between the Virginia Tech game (which I think is the one he attended) and today in terms of our PG recruiting that has caused us to ease off and now press? I mean, Sina's stock should not have changed during that timeframe, right?

I think TB is realizing the big names he went after for the PG position isn't coming here, so he needs to jump back in on his 2nd tier ones. I will never blame a coach for going for the top-shelf talent. Of course I could be totally wrong, but it is JMO.

    • Does anyone have a good "comparable" for his game? I'm really struggling to come up with one, especially to a successful high major player. There's an athletic smoothness to him, but it's accompanied with an overwhelming lack of "lift" in everything he does. It's so pronounced in the layups that you see on his highlight videos that you think to yourself "Man, he can barely touch the backboard?", and it makes you wonder if he'll even be able to get shots off against the athletes at this level. Unfortunately the guy that he reminds me most of is Greg Paulus, and we all know how his game was just swallowed up and negated by the talent in the ACC. Does anyone have a better one?

Ny hoo u nailed it. U goin to tell me because a top100 kid have two bad games u goin to stop recruiting him. That nonsense and this go back to bennett is in a dream world when it come to pg recruiting. Top pg want to run and gun. They want to go to the nba. If u have a quality player like sina lovin your program u dnt stop recruiting him. U jus dont now we back recruiting him and have to build tht trust again. I love bennett but he is not handling this right and instead of downvoting let me see how im wrong. I will love the opportunity to see wht im missing.

Just a couple thoughts. IMO, if we are going to be able to stay on Sina's list, Tony is going to have to go all-in the way he did for Thomas. Based on the comments Sina has made here and in response to Seton Hall picking up Aquille Carr, I think both Sina and father place a lot of importance on the amount of interest a school shows.

Second, its interesting to me that we are going up against Alabama for both Sina and Barber. I can understand Barber looking favorably on a traditonal power like Kansas, but Alabama's role is intriguing to me. What are these pgs looking at down there?

With both guys, I think it's their relationship with Anthony Grant.

Grant is a young, energetic guy that has a way of relating to these kids. That's the impression I'm getting out on the recruiting trail anyway.
