I always find it interesting when a recruit talks about academics while naming Vandy, UVa, Wake, Duke, etc. only to have Illinois become one of the favorites. It seems to happen alot. In this case, maybe the family connection is the reason, but in most cases, the addition of Illinois seems to indicate that academics have slipped down the list of priorities for the recruit and been replaced by other things.

I hope Hamilton's interest in Illinois turns out to be a passing fancy and he realizes the value of a UVa education and a chance to play for Mike London.

U of I isn't a slouch of a school when it comes to academics really. I know it's no UVA but jeez. You make it sound real bad. Hoping he picks the Hoos. I know there's a logjam at WR right now but you can never have too much talent on your roster. It is surprising to see how many of our targets have listed Illinois over the years though. Apparently the new coach is recruiting well.

    • "Academics" means different things to different kids. For many if not most HS FB recruits, academics simply means support to stay eligible and get a degree. Few are actually looking at Forbes, US News, or other college rankings.

    • Illinois isn't UVA, but IllinoisHoo is right, it's not a bad school whatsoever. Has a few good programs as well including engineering I believe. These are all major universities, so if you get the right mentorship, you can find the academic experience you're looking for.

Totally agree with you in that a person can get a very good education at just about any D1 school. I say D1 because that is where the high level of sports mainly resides. UVA IMO differs from most schools because the options are fewer in the course loads you can pick from. I may be wrong there and I am sure I will be corrected if so. Won't go into a lot of detail but spent a lot of time in both human resources and teaching leadership preparation for both private and military settings. I have stated before I prefer the more well rounded education with different levels of ability within the student body. That does not seem to sit well with most members on this board. That's fine. I can say with certainty that the piece of paper showing where you went to school only helps in mostly professional fields. Psych evaluations shows no preference to where you attended your higher education time. Young people that play sports in college need more time for all the obligations they have and I believe that is a reasonable statement. Some are extremely gifted and do not need this but very few and usually are not your superstars anyway. but that is beside the point. Some of the most talented persons I have had the privalage of working with have come out of the big 10 and sec. That is also probably a shock but is true. I prefer people that are adaptable and that usually presents itself where different people are thrown together and have to adapt.
